Nitro Company Shell Problem
Went to pattern my gun today with the Nitro shell but had a problem with the shell ejecting.I have a new Mossberg 500 pumpbut every time i shot the shell it got stuck, couldnt eject it.Had to take the barrel off to get the shell out every time.I shot the Winchester Xtended and another shell and didnt have that problem.
Anyone have this problem? or any info you could give me to fix this problem. Thank you Artie |

I've heard this same story last spring about people having those shells jam in there guns:( I would us this as a learning exp and go out and buy your self some WIN EXT RANGE #5's and never have to worrie if my shell is going to get jammed;)
That guy is prob so busy right now that they are just sending anything out the door!!! |
RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
This is a picture of the shell. The nitro is the blue and the black is the Win EXT Range. As you can see in the picture theNitro has some sort of glue on the end.You thinkwhen it opens up the glue get heated up and sticks to the barrel?

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
Call NITRO and tell them. I am sure that he could tell you what the problem might be and even refund you or send you some more ammo. I've heard of him doing it in the past.

Thanks guys for the info.Just sent them an email.

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
What choke are you using? I would think that you should get a better pattern with the Winchester's. Esp considering the pattern has a big hole in the center.

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
I'm using a Rhino choke.

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
You might want to shot a few of those shells at a turkey target also;)

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
best thing to do...since it jammed in your gun now....(hate to see it happen in the field) even tho it showed a pretty darned good pattern...use something your very sure of that works in your gun....remember...as a hunter, ethics are as important as the hunt and kill...you gotta think of what is right.

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
With a pattern like that, one shot is all you'll need :D

new Mossberg 500 pump but every time i shot the shell it got stuck, couldnt eject it.Had to take the barrel off to get the shell out every time.I shot the Winchester Xtended and another shell and didnt have that problem. And getting stuck. Try rubbing some lube of some kind on the brass. And try it again. I had this happen with a 22 with federal bird shot. It would swell up a little after being shot. I would rub some oil on the bottom of the case Before loading them and they, Would eject like normal. Hope this helps |
RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
Ray does NOT build junk and his quality is consistently better than factory fodder. His loads are simply VERY heavy and your gun might have a tight chamber and when the brass does expand at firing, yes you will get a hang up. LOL I also agree, with a pattern like that you WON'T need to worry about a second shot. "Follow up shots" are for those who aren't confident in their own shooting abilities. I have used Nitro exclusively for 3 years now and I have NEVER seen birds fall so hard as they do with this stuff. I mean they hit the ground like they have been laying there for a month! That glue is blown off the shell when it's fired. Its purpose is simply to keep the shell tightly closed because he packs them with so much shot and because his buffering is as fine as talcum powder.
Good luck, RA |
RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
I have to say that looks like a pretty good pattern, if your aim is true you won't need to worry about a second shot. Does anyone shoot the nitro's out of chokes other than the Rhinos?

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
Artie, I use the same exact gun, and the same Nitro 4x5x7.5 shot its #301a. My shells are red, but I bought them when Nitro was still in N.Y. So maybe they've changed something since. But I've never had one of their shells jam up in my Mossberg. I'd definitly give them a call. Because obviously your gun is patterning better with the Nitro.
I'd also like to add gun wise, have you tried pump racking the gun a little harder? When my Mossberg Deer Gun was new I'd get jam ups if I didn't rack it hard enough until it broke in a little. I also placed a few drops of gun oil like Break Free in the slide rails both by the pump, and inside the chamber. So try that first. |
RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
I had the same gun and same problem. I called Ray and he credited my credit card for the shells and let me keep them. I forgot the reason he told me why it happend. This has been 4-5 years ago. I now use a Browning and they are great shells.

RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
I bet if Win loaded 70% #7 shot in the shells they would pattern like that also

Thanks guys for the info
I got a reply from Sandy and she said that the Mossbergs always had cycling problems with the longer brass shells. She also said that she can send me some with shorter brass that wont have that problem. Not sure if i'll get the same pattern with the shorter brass but i'll give it a shot and see. BuckAlly i did try to pump rack it but it was way to hard. When i got home i took off the barrel and tried to insert the spent shells into the barrel. The Winchesters went in with no problem all the way to the brass. The Nitros had a hard time getting even before the brass. |
RE: Nitro Company Shell Problem
I hear that Nitro is turning over the manufacturing to a foregin company that is building a manfg. plant in the US.
The patterns looks OK. I'd say the Win is about maxed at 30 yd., but the Nitros may go 35 or 40 yds. Shooting at a turkey target will help. You can down load them from the web. |
