RE: Team One!!!
I harvested one this morning at 6:30am of Ohio's opening day...here is the details on the bird..
Well I got right in the middle of them this morning, had 4 differant gobblers going off and a few hens. The hen's where roosted in some tree's behind me so with me yellping and the hen's yellping it was almost two easy of a set-up. I heard the 2 closest to me hit the grounds and gave a few yelps to let them know one was close. The 2 came all puffed up and by 6:40 my first morning was all over. I am going to say the other probably had a little better fan then this one but not sure on how he would of weighed. Both beards looked to be about the same length to me, I stepped off 30 paces to where he laid in the woods. This morning makes me remember real fast of those years when I wonderd if I was ever going to get a bird..His beard was 11 1/4 inches long, weight is 22lbs and 1 spur is 1 inch the other was just over a inch.. ![]() |
RE: Team One!!!
Hey fellas,
Took a nice bird this morning here in WI on the first day of my season. Actually it was in the first 15 min. of my season...lol Not really any story to tell other than I put him to bed last night and was waiting for him this morning. He landed and gobbled and went into to strut.I gave him a couple of soft clucks, and he broke strut to gobble...the end of his gobble marked the end of his life! Weight: 26.125# Right Spur: 1.125" Left Spur: 1.125" Beard: 10.5" TOTAL: 69.625 Not my biggest by any means, but a nice bird none the less. Good luck to rest of Team 1 and nice work HS88. I'll try to get some pics on here too, but don't know if I can find anyone to take the pics, and I gotta get him cleaned up. |

RE: Team One!!!
Season opened here in IN yesterday and I was fortunate enough to tag one. The morning started off fantastic as it was dead calm and a frost had settled in overnight. The birds started gobbling in the roost around 0630 and I had 10 of them in front of me by 0700. As they made their way towards me a small jake stood about 20 yards in front of me as the other three strutted for the 6 hens they had with them at about 60 yards. The jake was tempting, but I couldn't do it, I just had to wait for one of the longbeards. As luck would have it the hens took the gobblers with them and my calls were no match for the real deal.
I had no more than picked up my decoys when I got another tom to respond about 300 yards away. I closed to about 75 yarsd and set up the decoys again. The problem was thatI was in a set aside field with little cover and the birds, now two of them, were in the woods with some tall weeds bordering the edge. I had to makethe decision fast because these guys were fired up and hammeringback a response everytime I made a call. It took about 4 minutes for those birds, now three toms!!, closed to within shooting distance. Due to the tall weeds the distance was now about 10 yards as all three appeared at once strutting and gobbling their heads off. I picked the closest one and my season was over at about 0900. 20#, 10" beard and 23mm spurs. I will post the score and picture over the weekend then I will be off to hunt Merriams in the Black Hills of South Dakota for a week!! |

RE: Team One!!!
I have been chasing a big bird behind my house for the past three days. My Father In Law and I went in well before daylight this morning by the infamous Miss My Deer Tree and the Birds were roosted and gobbling there ass' off. Rich, my father in law went up near a field edge and I pulled off some sniper tatics and tucked in as close as I could to the trees that held the birds. I was about 25 yards from them as they started to fly down and of course they started walking in the other direction. I yelped real soft and low and behold three birds gobbled about 30 yards from me but I could not see them because of where I positioned myself. It was really hard to see because it was barely light out but I caught movement through my scope to my right about 25 yards and it was a longbeard feeding in the woods. his head popped up again and I let er' fly. Dropped stone cold. I would also like to say that this was not the bird I was after, but he will do just fine.
21.8 pounds left spur 1 1/8 right spur 1 1/8 beard 10 3/4 I'll have pictures posted later after I get them developed to make everything legit. |
RE: Team One!!!
My season starts in a week from tomorrow... I'm pumped!!! Tons of sign, and have seen a few big ones. I'll let you know what happens.

I got my first gobbler ever this year. Just so happened to be on my first day out! See my post called "shot my first, on my first day!" for a quick story. If you are to lazy here are the stats and the pic. weight 17.75 lbs beard 9" spurs 1" and 7/8" Total score 50.125 Probably done for the year even though I could get another tag and hunt till the end of may. Hunting grounds are 3 hours away, few turkey around here, and I have to work on weekends to make some money. I'll be out next year though! [/align] |

RE: Team One!!!
Wow...nice bird Spiffy. Just wanted to pop in and report.........Season come.....season gone. Birds 1, hunter 0. The particular 2 counties my buds and I hunted in were hunted hard during our first season.........BADLY! Got out early every morning.......heard hens purring on the nests.......would call.......even the hens shut up. These birds were so call shy, it wasn't funny. In the end, I saw one jake hauling butt across the road as I was heading back to the vehicle.
I know next year, I am applying for first season and am not hunting in the counties I had this year. Hunters, (If you would call them that), in those counties shoot anything that moves during both Turkey and Deer season. It is sickening. Anyhow, sorryguys.....I tried but to no avail. Ugh. |
