What is the best turkey shell for a Mossberg 835
 

I have a Mossberg 835 12 gauge with a 24" barrel and a Primos Tightwad choke tube. I have a hard time getting out to shoot nor do I have that much money to go out and buy up 10 different boxes of shells to practice with. I have recently purchased Winchester Supreme 3" and 3 1/2" #5's. I used the 3" before with a remington, but I don't know how it will do in my mossberg. If anyone has any suugestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Winchester 2oz #5's in 3" is exactly what I shoot out of my Mossberg 835 with a Madd Maxx choke....I have no reason to go to 3.5" so...you'll probably do well with either you mentioned however I would still pattern them prior to going out this season.....

All shells shoot differently in all make/model guns and choke combinations....shoot a couple and they'll let you know...

Hard to say - every gun and choke seems to be different.

My 835 with a Star Dot .690 tube shot the Winchester 3.5 inch, 2.25 oz of #5 like crap. Federal Tightwads (2 oz #6) didn't shoot much better. Ported chokes supposedly defeat the purpose of the Federal Tightwad anyway because they tend to strip the wad from the shot. Federal tightwad rounds shot better with my unported Mossberg UltiMag turkey choke.

The round that shot the best by a very large margin from my 835 was the Hevi Shot, 1.75 oz of #6. Devestating number of hits in the head and neck from 35 yards. No comparison to the lead shells.

Mouthcaller I think you meant fed flight control instead of Fed tight wad. I think he is using a primos tight wad choke, but anyway. I shoot Win Xtended Range #6's or win 2 1/4oz. #4's out of my mossberg 835 with the mossberg exta full turkey choke and get good patterns out of both. I'm not real shure if you are suppose to shot the xtended range out of the factory choke but it hasn't hurt anything YET!!!!!

No one can answer this for you. EVERY GUN/SHELL/CHOKE combo shoots different.

I think a good start is any Winchester loads. The 835/Star Dot combo that I used to have shot very well with 3.5'' Winchester HV #6s.

Give the Winchester XR's a try.

i used 3" flight control federals #4,#5,#6 and all worked pretty good. this year I've got and undertaker choke thats a little tighter so I'm going to try a #6 shot with a lighter load than the 2 oz. let you boys know how it goes. good luck to all this year.

I was chucking alot of 3.5" loads, and was not impressed with the patterns.
The other day I tried the FliteControl 3"'s in #5 and #6, and was pretty damn impressed. At 30 yards I was putting 15-21 pellets in the brain spine, and it was one devastating group...even, tight, and if that bird is within 3 inches of my red dot on either side, it is nighty night time. I should mention that the best patterns are with my StarDot and my Northwind, the latter which I got four years ago at WalMart, and isnt made anymore. It was my origional choke, and I think will continue to be my choke. Couple hundred dollars later, and five new chokes, and I end up with the same one....go figure (keep an eye on ebay boys);)
The FliteControls dont like ports, so try the undertaker.
I shoot better with 3"ers, I am less jumpy and I just like how they feel out of the barrel...
Remember, your choke/shell combo is 50%, being able to be confident and pull a good shot with it is the other 50%...keep this in mind!:eek:

I have a gun exactly like yours and the best turkey shell for it is WINCHESTER SUPREME thay are the most accurate and definitly reliable

I just shot the hevi 13(#6's) today and it does pretty darn good, with 17-21 pellets in the brain and spine of a primos turkey target. With Win xtended (#6's) I got 15-18 in the brain and spine and with win 2 1/4 oz. #4's I got 8-13 in the brain and spine. All of these are at 40 yards (used a range finder) and all pellets countedare in the spine and skull. The choke I used is the mossberg xtra full turkey choke.

I have a Mossberg 835 w/primos Tight wad choke. I tried 4 loads.
Win. Supreme 3in #5 and Remington #5 Hevi-Shot, Remington Mag #6 Copper Plated lead and last but not least, Remington Nitro Turkey Hard lead.

1st place would be Remington Hevi-Shot 3in #5 ( at a hevi-price

2nd went to ... beleive it or not $4.99 a box Remington NitroTurkey Lead.
@ 35 yrds. Consistant 20 pellet count in the vitals.
@40 yrds. Consistant 11 pellet count in the vitals.

Not going to get that 45 yard great pattern as with some hevi-shot loads, but for 4.99 a box and 20 pellets @ 35 yard + not a bad 40 yard shot. Id try Nitro Turkey.
