Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
does anyone carry these while they're turkey hunting. i noticed the h.s strut people carry them and it got me to thinking of how many times i had been forced to try and find a tree that didn't have branches around the bottom. would it be a good idea to get a pair and put them in my vest or is it a waste of money and space??

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I always carry something to cut branches or limbs..because i also like to through some natrual vegitation around my blind if im sittin in one...or if i find a good spot but there is some branches or brush not alowing me to sit there..i'll wack em' down.

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I carry a small sheathed saw!Just like cm talked about if I have time,I add natural vegetation to some of my set-ups as well and remove those limbs in my shooting lanes!;)

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
They are also great for cutting the legs off of deer when you are skinning them out. Use the kind that have the ratchet and it will save you a lot of time and energy. You wont have to use a saw or hatchet.

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I have been carrying a pair for years in my vest as well. I have the original ratchet pruners made by Florian. These work very slick indeed!!
For cutting branches to use as a blind, or cutting saplings that are in the way when your setting up. Every turkey hunter should carry a pair in his/her vest.;) http://www.floriantools.com/Merchant...=florian_tools |
RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters

they are a must have for any hunter...especially any turkey hunter. |
RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I never go hunting without ratchet pruners and a folding saw. The pruners see LOTS of action. Many times, the branches I cut for shooting lanes get used to help break up my outline by placing them in front of where I'm going to be calling from...

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
They are invaluable tools for the field. I think Gerber sells them both in a kit that's fairly inexpensive and they are of excellent construction.;)

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
Black pruning shears work pretty good for me.

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
i have a $25 gift card to bass pro so i may have to get a pair of ratchet cutters then. hand saws seem to make too much noise to me.
bobgobble i think bass pro has that for like $20. |

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I don't have any yet, but I'll guarantee they're better than what I've used in the past. 3 yrs ago, I tried to cut a small branch out of my way with a pocket knife and it wound up into my knuckle on my left hand and I wound up birdless and sitting at the ER getting it all sewed back up and a finger splint to hide for the rest of the season. BTW I haven't tried cutting any more limbs with my pocket knife since.

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I'd recommend Florian. Cheaper ones don't last.

RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I'vehad a Gerber for over ten years, and I use it a lot, but I've never liked it. Half the time it won't ratchet, the cutting blade is, IMHO, too thin, and sometimes there's not enough power (again, mostly because I think its too thin) to "crank down" and prune off athicker branch. Sometimes the thin cutting blade wants to twist and you can't get a good cut, too.
I'd never heard of a Florian until I read this topic/post, but I may have to look into replacing that Orange and Black Gerber with one of those. I carry a saw, too, but I think I use it less than once a year, on average, so if I was looking in my pocketbook, I'd start with just a ratchet pruner. |
RE: Hand clippers/ratchet cutters
I have a small Gerber fold out hand saw. It is super sharp and cuts very quick. I havn't tried hand pruners but I don't think I am willing to switch from my saw and it is useless to carry both when my saw will handle more than pruners will. Cheap ones don't work good, it has to be a gerber. http://www.gerbergear.com/product.php?model=6034 [/align] |
