Repair a slate?
 

I have a slate call someone gave me and the acryllic (spelling?) striker is wearing down. Does anybody know of a good way to round it out again and keep the point smooth enough to still work good? It is a hand made call and I don't really want to buy a new striker.

Try sanding it down or scrapping it with a knife. New strikers are cheap if you cant fix it.

im goin with what kybuck said..you can always find another striker pretty cheap unless that one has a sentimental value of some sort i would understand.

You can sand the tip to whatever shape you want. We use a belt sander to round the tips on our strikers, but sandpaper works just as well, just takes longer.

Yeah I've tried sand paper and then the a type of leather thing they use at the old barber shops to shapen a blade (I used it to try to polish the end of the striker) but nothing gets it smooth and polished to work right on my slate.

If you are trying to polish it find a wood worker who has a polishing wheel. They should put a shine on it for you. You will not do it by hand. If this doesn't work pay the 5 dollars for a new one.

Get a Primos™ Slik Stik , it has everything you need to condition your slate and your strikers . It even has a chalk stick in the handle for other call types . It's just a couple of bucks at Wally World .

i always carry sandpaper and steel wool with me in case something like that happens
