turkey calls
Hello all,
This is Chunker from SW Iowa and I'm hoping to go on my first turkey hunt in the near future. I don't really know anyone who hunts turkey and I have a few questions. Mainly about calls. I been looking into box calls, diaphrams, slate calls, and push/pull box calls. Just looking for some opinions on what works the best. Also i've seen prices on calls range quite a bit. (ex. box calls from $6 to $60). Is spending more worth the money, or am i going to get the samething for any price. Also are there any gimics out there that are basicly there just for idiots and newbees like me that I should stay away from, kinda like under coating on a new car. Thanks in advance for the help! |
RE: turkey calls
IMO box calls are by far the easiest to use. There are several good ones out there, my personal favorite being the World Campion by Lynch. Great sound and volume. Some of the paddle boat syle boxes are good, too. The Quaker Boy Curve is a good one. A glass or slate call is also very easy to use. The Freak by Primos is a good one. Actually, I can't really think of a "bad" slate call. The mouth call is prolly the most realistic sounding, but is also the most difficult to master. If you decide to get one, I would suggest starting with a single reed call until you learn how to control the call. Single reeds don't need as much air to blow so they won't want to jump out of your mouth. The more aggresive styles, such as a 3 or 4 reed, or any of the split reeds require quite a bit of air control. Once you master it, though, it's awesome!! Good luck.

RE: turkey calls
i also use use a lynch box call (the raspy hen),the freak slate call, and the sweet hen by knight and hale. none of these are very expensive and have worked while i'm trying to master mouth calls. keep it simple anddo whatever you can to find a mentor. a good mentor will volunteer to take you hunting and will do everything possible to help you get your first bird

RE: turkey calls
I use Quaker Boy mouth, slate and box call. But I also have slates by Primos, and Cody. Push button calls works good also. Its all depends on how much money you want to spend.

RE: turkey calls
Hey all this is Chunker again, thanks for all the great advice, I plan to go out within the next month, maybe next weekend, and see what I can call in. Is there a certain time of the spring the toms get intrested in the ladies or will they generally respond to anytime of the year. I'm planning on going out on my land and just kinda sitting the middle to get as much attention as possible, since I don't have to worry about shooting lanes...or really gettting any shots at all, I'm hoping to draw them from anywhere. Just to see where they are coming from. Thanks again.

RE: turkey calls
I likea good slate call which is easy and yet is capable of making a lot of different calls. I also always have a diaphram to break one from strutting.

RE: turkey calls
if you're a beginner then start off with a box call...they are much easier to learn...best of luck to you.

RE: turkey calls
I think one of the easiest and best sounding slate type calls for a beginner is Knight and Hales Ol' Yeller. For $15-20 its well worth the price.

RE: turkey calls
I use nothing but H.S. strutt. All their callsare great. I am finally mastering the sound of the mouth call and they are very realistic sounding, but the friction calls like slate, glass, or aluminum are very realistic sounding too...you just have to get that right pitch in there and you will hear what im talkin about..i mastered the friction calls a long time ago. But H.S. strut calls are good calls to use, i've called all my gobblers using H.S. strut. I suggest that if you are going to use a mouth call, like mowbohuntr said, start with a single reed, and then work your way up. And call with it every day, for at least two hours and watch videos and mimic what the pros sound like, thats what im doing and its workin great. Good luck!!
