i agree with taking their temp......take many calls and let the bird tell you what they want......i think the thing that seals the deal for me is like most i start with a power crystal or a freak,once they tell me what they want (you have to listen very closely its hard to hear them say ...i like that 1......) i start with the mouth call and make it sound like 2 hens competeing for the tom......i run them over the top of each other and space some out.......it drives them nuts.......but takes some practice

I use an aluminum friction call a bunch but the last couple of years, I've grown quite fond of my American Friction Cut-N-Paddle long box call. Man, that call sounds sweet and will call a turkey from a LONG ways off!

i start with a mouth call first light, tree yelps and flydown cacklesare easier for me with it..when i hear the birds pitch off roost, then i change over to my trusty slate. by mid-morning if nothing came in, i'll switch over to the boxes...i can reach out with the windy conditions further with the box although the pot calls are good for that too...those are just my preferences...
