Treestands For Turkey
Do you think that a treestand would work for turkey hunting ?
Where I hunt turkey it is so thick you can't, See over 10 to 15 foot. So I am thinking a treestand would work. What do yall think ? Thank You |
RE: Treestands For Turkey
You are better off on the ground. Turkeys are always on the lookout for eagles and hawks. Movement is harder to hide. They will pick you out in a tree faster than on the ground.

RE: Treestands For Turkey
Turkeys from a treestand is very difficult as it is very easy for them to pick you out. Like said above, your better off on the ground where you can stay mobile.

If it is that thick I doubt you would be able to successfully call a tom into that mess.

RE: Treestands For Turkey
Last spring I had two coming from two different
Directions. They were drumming one was coming from the left. And one was coming from the right. And the both hung up. It sounded like they were about 40 to 50 yards. But I couldn't see either of them. Then it sounded like some hens came by and they left after them. Hopefully it will be better this spring. |

I would do some clearing if It was me. I wouldnt hunt from a treestand. Like the others said its too easy for them to see you.

I think you would really be better off on the ground. I've shot one out of a tree with a bow while deer hunting and I'm suprised I was able to. Most of the time they spot me way too soon out of a tree.

Turkeys look up all the time,, ifyou even flinched or took a breath they would be taking off running

RE: Treestands For Turkey
not sure how it will work, but on fort drum cantonment, you can only use tree stands and bows, so i am looking forward to trying, doubt there will be too many folks!

RE: Treestands For Turkey
I'm with the majority.Better off on the ground.Somewhere in that thick mess there must be an openin where the birds travel and strut etc.Maybe an old loggin road or somethin. That's where I would set up.

Jrbsr..I definately agree with the guys here!I hunt some thick country also but one thing I've found out is there are some openings within this thick stuff and trust me the birds know where there at also! Those gobblers usually like those openings to strut there stuff in during the spring!Jim is exactly right, roads, trails, creek banks, and usually on top of the ridges and hills there can be openings in thick country! You just gotta find em!!Also trust me from experience, once a gobbler pegs you from a treestand he will look at that stand everytime he comes into that particular area...Bob.
