turkey calls for dummies
 

I've always used a slate, but thought I would try a mouth diaphragm for fun. I bought a few of the Knight and Hale V ones, but can't make them work. Wither they feel like they cut mymouth, I gag and feel like I will hurl, or I just huff anf huff and get light headed. The only sound I get is nothing different than me takign the call out and just trying the same thing.

Is the round part supposed to be toward the throat and the flat part toward the teeth? Where is the latex supposed to be pressed against?

Sorry for such a stupid question, but I really can't make any sounds.

First off,There is no such thing as a stupid question. Place the call in your mouth with the tape towards your throat and the open end towards your lips.The longer reeds should be closest to the roof of your mouth.Keep workin at it and you'll get the hang of it.

I finally figured it out, kind of! :D

I admit it is a bit uncomfortable and makes me choke, even after trimming the tape a bit. Fun running around a yuppy subdivision yelping though! THe kids getting off the bus gave me some strange looks.

Not a stupid question. When I first tried turkey -- the hunting, not the food, I thought you did the call with your mouth alone. Needless to say, that's not right.

Hey your neighborhood must be like mine. Everyone things I'm nuts, including the kids, but I have a good time! Keep working at it, you'll get it.

You might try to trim the tape down a bit for a better & mroe comfortable fit. That might help reduce the gagging. With practice it won't happen so bad.

Take it easy, and trim off small slivers. You can always trim off some more, but you can't put it back on.

The diaphram just takes time, I would suggest getting a cd with the various call on it and listen and try to mimick what you hear. THe KNight and Hale calls with the yellow laytex work best for me. The are extremely raspy. One thing to remember is that no two turkeys sound the ssame so if you sound different it is fine. The main thing about Turkey calling is rythm. Get the rythm down...
