Depends on what part of the country! Here in Fl.
with all the palmetto's you have to be a good turkey hunter to kill an Oceola. |

Rebel Hog , some day I would like to try Florida in the fall , that would be neet.
Fall hunts can be done a number of ways. Find a flock of birds and bust them up by running at them. You want to try and bust them in all directions and then sit at the bust up point or close and call them back in. Assembly Yelping- Kee-kee - Kee Kee- Run's are most comonly used to call and regroup the flock.... This sort of way in some states is done with Dogs that will bust the flocks and return to sit beside the hunter while he or she uses their magic. Gobbler groups can be busted up the same way only it may take days for the group to return. Course Clucking and Gobbler Yelping will help you out in this sort of hunt. Sitting on feeding areas is a good way to find flocks and could also lead into traveling birds walking within range. Decoys can be of some help aswell , as aggressive birds will come in to play the dominates in the area flocks. Hope this may help you on your quest...BT |

Hunt the food sources. Up here in Vermont, if there are acorns on the ground, the turkeys won't be far away. Look for where they have been scratching around. They will continue to hit the food source until it is gone. Uses soft clucks to try and get them into range. I usually only bring a diaphragm call with me in the fall.

Here in Tennessee it is pretty simple if you have decent land. I see ton's of turkey in the fall when I am bow hunting deer. I even bring my box call. The deer will roll right in when they hear that turkey call. They think its safe if the turkeys are talking. So thats the main reason I even have a few fall beards on my wall.

I simply do a lot of walk until I find them. I then setup near by and do some light calls. It is a total different hunt then spring turkey:)

RE: How to hunt Fall Turkeys
I have atip for when trying to bust up aflock if they are on the ground try to rush in when the turks are facing in different directions they generally fly in the direction they are facing this ensures a good bust up also if they are still on the roost make sure the sky is black with no hint of daylight in the east or west depending on A.M. orP.M.

RE: How to hunt Fall Turkeys
keep your ears open in the mornings and evenings when they fly down or go to roost. If you hear them roost at night then you know where to hunt the next day. Gobblers dont call as much. They are loners in the fall. Hens and jakes usually stick together from my experiences. You will know when a flock is headed your way....sounds like a hundred rakes raking (best way to describe it). Good luck!
