Turkey call question
I just joined a hunt club this year that has a large turkey population. I have never really hunted them due to not having any to hunt before.Yesterday evening I had 3 nice birds with good beards walk right under my ladder stand. They saw me and started making clucks, which must have been an alarm because theyall ranoff. About 5 minutes later they came back and were soft clucking and purring. I have seen callers on tv that make those same sounds. Now I am confused. Why make a call that a turkey would use to sound an alarm? We have no fall season here but any info would be great for the spring season.

RE: Turkey call question
what the turkeys you saw were doing was actually what is called PUTTING,it's their way of telling others something isn't right.....a cluck is different , the clucking and purring you heard the second time was probably them just feeding by, they cluck and purr when they are relaxed, it's a way of communicationor when they are getting aggressive(which in that case is louder).....you'll be able to tell what they're saying before long, you just have to spend time in the woods learning and watching....

RE: Turkey call question
Dmax, ma gives you some great incite! The first sounds you heard for sure were "putts"!Sometimes low pressure birds can be quite curious! They knew something wasn't quite right but upon nothin chasing them there curiosity led them back to check you out!The clucks and purrs you were hearing upon there return were made to keep each other aware of where each of them were at, encouraging each other to keep there confidence up, and to keep there heads up cause they knew you were there! If you would have noticably moved at this point or made a threatening attempt to make them believe you were after them those clucks and purrs would have changed immediately back over to putts and once again they would have moved on!Intensity and situation in most cases dictates vocabulary in the world of turkey talk!!:)
