how do you preserve legs and/or spurs?
 

Got a couple of legs in the fridge, not quite sure how to preserve the spurs. I've seen legs/feet pretty much preserved whole, and I've seen spur necklaces which look pretty cool. I guess I have another day or so to decide what to do with the legs, or maybe freeze them until I figure out what to do. What do you all do with your spurs? how do you preserve them and what do you do with them? How do you preserve the whole leg/foot?

To preserve the whole leg, cut it off at the joint, then set it flat against a wall, while placing wieght on top of it to hold it down, adjust how you want it to set, add some borax/salt to the top and let it dry, very easy. I have 2 sets downstairs right now that are ziptied to pieces of cherry keeping them flat so when they dry they will be able to stand up freely....can't wait till thier done.

cut the bone off just below the joint,split the ball of the foot about 1/2",slip a stiff wire or screwdriver in and under the leaders.pull them out.run a pipe cleaner into the hole and twist to remove the marrow.pour it full of salt or borax.run a heavy wire down the hole and drive into a board.bend it until the foot is stright and spread toes.after about 3 or 4 weeks the foot will be stiff and cured.

lay felt over the end and use black thread and wrap. "Done".

you can then do as you want.

The guys give you some great advice...To add a little take some clear fingernail polish once cured/dried and add a few coats to your spurs and legs!It adds a beautiful sheen to your subject!!;)

Thanks guys, I'm sure the more detailed procedure will yield great results, but since I'm lazy, I went with the easier one. We'll see how they come out.

Heck i just cut the leg at the joint let em lay the toes curl but thats ok for me

just twisted the leg right off, then i salted the top, and they are currently drying in my room right now
