Prolly got shot there but just enough to take some of the skin/fur off.
Looks like he'll be just fine though.

That would definately make for an interesting mount if he gets a couple more years of growth on him. Nice floppy ear doe too.

Got any big cats in your neck of the woods?

I've seen vids of cougars biting deer in that general area when trying to suffocate them.
