Slow growing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
I've just been doing some comparisons of my bucks to your guys bucks. It seems that all my bucks are still on the first stages of their growth. Many still only have the little nubsof velvet. Few are starting to form the brow tines.
I have no doubt that they will start growing big time later on but are you Iowa folks like this also? If you have any Iowa pictures post them up! :D |
RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
i thought the same thing when i saw your pics i thought they grew quicker than that in iowa

RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
Some of the bucks shedded their antlers a little late so that might have something to do with it.

I am from northern Iowa, and we have got some bucks with 10 inch tines already. The rest have grown at least grown 12" beams.

and me? :D
what are you feeding them? |
RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
pope i think it has to do with like how much nutrients they get. do you have any mineral sites
|
RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
No I have nothing out. Never have, but we still mangage to see and harvest great deer every year. Our deer have just been feeding on the alfalfa fields, corn, and bean fields.

Every individual buck is different. Look at me, Freak Daddy had 10 inch main beams in early May, while some of my bucks still have just 2-3 inches of antler now in June. All that matters is what they look like in October.

RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
Pope dont worry about it! I think my bucks are a little behind schedule aswell this year but even so I know from experience that their antlers will be almost fully grown by the end of the first week of July:)Pike

RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
J Pike, I have no doubt that they will grow into something special sooner or later. Im not likingthe pictures of the small velvet bucks and patients is wearing down on me. But I guess Ill have to deal with it. lol Its going to be a painful summer. :(
Siman, remember how I said I was gonna buy a cuddeback the first of july. Well its getting pushedback now. :( Im buying a new video camera first. I need it more than the cuddeback so I guess ill have to add the cuddeback to the christmas list. Maybe ill have it by late season. Why haven't you had your stealth in? No batteries? |
RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll take the pictures off my Trophy cam, and I will better know how big the bucks are up here.

Im sorry but how on Earth can you guys wait so long to check your cameras. It must be very very hard for you guys. Im out at the cabin every weekend so all I have to do is walk 400-500 yards to check my cameras but even though they are still so close I still need to check them often.
In fact, im going out this weekend for my brothers birthday party. Hes having some friends over and they are going to stay at the cabin. |

Unless im hunting then its a differant story. But with cameras its not. Its not easy having your camera 400 yards from you and NOT checking it. Maybe I should put a electric shock collar around my wrist so when I go to reach for the trail camera I get zapped. Im sure that would stop me. Actually I dont think it would. [&:] |
RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
Pope I feel the same way as you, I can never wait to go check my cameras and mine are also close so I am always anxious to do so and end up checking them every 5 or 6 days even though I would like it to be every two weeks.

RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
I don't have a lot of growth on the bucks that I have pics of either so don't feel like the Lone Ranger. :D I know there are some dandy bucks in my area, I just can't wait till the apples start dropping because that's when the big boys come. I need to find a good hay field the boys are visiting and hang my camera there.

RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
You got two posts there. :D
Well as you can tell from my Unibrow buck, im no longer apart of the slow growing club. Do the apples really work? I thought about planting some apple trees in our timber but im afraid I would have to put fence around it because of the cattle. |
RE: Slow groing Iowa Bucks? Whats up with that?
Sorry about the (2) post, my PC has a mind of its own sometimes.
Here is the proof that apples work on my property. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
