Most likely an injury from an antler or stick. Advantage for us hunters, bad for the buck. I was lucky enough to come across a buck like this when I was still hunting into the wind several years ago, I shot the buck in his bed.

Looks like a buck to me and I bet it was injured sometime during a fight.
