I am wondering how many cameras do you think you need per acre to get a good idea of the kind of deer on a certain property. I also placed this in the bowhunting section. Sorry for putting it in two spots, but I am very curious about peoples ideas here.

I personally don't look at the camera per acre aspect. I have 3 cameras right now. 4th maybe soon. You could have 100's of acres but only a pecentage of that is what the deer use. Before season, (May or June) I have an aerial map of my land and pick out funnels, crop corners and other natural areas for deer. Set out trophy rocks and and see what that attracts. Then in around Aug I walk all my field edges and see where the most tracks are and look into the timber to find the trails. Gives a good idea of whats out there but when rut kicks in it all changes. Get picks of bucks I've never seen and the ones that I did get pics of seem to disappear. Just experiment and move them and see what you get.

How many do you need or how many would you like to have? I have 4 on 160 acres right now and am thinking about getting another. It is intersting that I have some pictures of a particular deer on one camera but not on any of the others. You could probably get a good idea of your population if you just moved one camera around a bunch though. I like to use my cameras to tryto get a feel for behaviour patterns but it is really pretty hit or miss most of the time.

i think it really depends on your area. i only hunt public land and i will have 6-10 cams up in a 1/2 mile to 1/2 mile box.

I can understand your question. I look at it more like needing to have the cameras in which key areas. But for inventory reasons I would say onecamera every 20 acres or so in my opinion where I hunt.

I only have 1 right now, and that is on 15 acres. I have had up to 3 out at one time, but I am down to 1 right now.

good poll.

I think a lot of it depends on the type of camera. I've moved away from white flash cameras on my primary hunting land all together. now, i just wish my moultries were quieter and didn't have the red light. if they were super quiet and no red light then i'd be comfortable with one every 5 acres.
