Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
Okay, I think I've officially crossed the threshold of sanity. Yesterday a co-worker stopped by my land because he was in the area and checked on things and happened to mention that there was a deer that had been killed by a car just 3/4 of a mile from my property.
So I zipped down there last night, threw the carcass in the bed of the truck, dove to the land and plopped it down about 10 feet away from one of my trail cameras. What should I expect to find on the camera in a week when I go to check on it? I've read that coyotes aren't really into eating things that are already dead, what about bobcats? I wonder if the pigs will come eat it? I figure it will for sure attract some vultures. Hopefully they will do a good job eating it in the next week and it won't be a rotting stinking mess when I go back and check on it. Anyone else done something like this? Am I completely insane? |

Here are some pictures posted by someone else.

The top picture is mine. It was on a corn pile but I think he was snooping around because the neibors dog was in heat.

Not insane at all. I had camera out all winter on skinned beaver carcasses. You get tons of pics of birds. I got pics of skunks, coyotes, cats, dogs, owls like picking at things too. I would love to have had a deer carcass, its illegal for me to pick up roadkill and take it. God knows why. F&G would rather it rot in the ditch I guess.
Don't know why someone would say coyotes dont eat dead stuff. They love dead stuff, the stinkier the better. |
RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
I didn'tthink about it being illegal to move the road kill. I'll have to check on that! [&:]
I would have to guess this had been dead for about a day already. It had plenty of flies on it and was starting to stink. It looks like one of this years fawns because it was pretty small. I didn't check it out too closely, I was wearing gloves and holding my breath for the most part! Hopefully I'll get some decent pictures of something! |

RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
I tried it once, a few years ago with a 35 mm camera, and the first pic was a coyote, but the noise of the camera scared it, and after that nothing except deer, I did get some pics of deer coming up to it and checking it out. This winter, we butchered a steer, and hauled the carcass back into the woods, and I hung my cuddeback on it, I got several pics of a huge chicken hawk, and a few crows, some deer passing by, and several awesome coyote pics up close and personal. Oh and one red fox, it was pretty cool to get pics of different stuff. Heres a couple pics.

RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
Well, I guess I was wrong that there wasn't anything out there big enough to drag the carcass off. The day after I put it out there were several pictures with buzzards picking on it, then I got a couple pictures of a coyote investigating it and then it was gone! Poof!! I looked around for it for a while and would have thought that the smell would have allowed me to find it but it must have been either picked clean or drug off a ways. I found a few patches of hair but nothing else.
After the deer was gone I got a couple other pictures of a deer smelling the ground where the dead deer had been and a couple of a coyote looking around but that was it. Of course somehow after looking at the pictures on my computer out on the property I put the card with the pictures back in the camera and brought the blank one back home so nothing to post now. [&:] I'll post them in a couple weeks or so next time I go check on things. FWIW, Nathan |
RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
Yotes will drag a deer without any effort especially if its a pack of them. Is it possibly a cougar? That would be insane to get a pic of and then a shot;)they'd make one heck of a rug.
I have also tried the deer carcass thing when I first got my camera, but I made the mistake of putting out the camera right away then took it down after two weeks. two weeks later I was out doing somthing and all that was left was the top of the skull and the skin.... and it was moved 70 yards |
RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
I got the pictures off the card today. Here is the last picture with the carcass in front of the camera:
![]() The way the camera is set it takes 3 pictures in rapid succession then waits a minute and if there is still movement it takes 3 more pictures, etc. Well evidently it took the coyote less than a minute to drag the deer off because that's the last I ever saw of the deer. Here's a picture of the buzzards eating on it: ![]() There are some other pictures on my photo gallery. New pictures start on page 3 - http://padens.com/ipw-web/gallery/trailcams?page=3 Thought I would update the post with the pics I got. |
RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
NP Thanks for sharing... nice pics. We put up pig remains and have a camera watching over it. The card it coming back today so we will see.
The coyote are always sweet pictures. What happen on the raccoon hunting? My brother shot two at night last week. |
RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
I still haven't ever been out there at night yet. I really need to get a decent spotlight and do some raccoon hunting though. Maybe even try some night pig hunting.
Your brother have any tips on raccoon hunting? |
RE: Camera over Deer Carcass - what to expect?
Look at your pics to see when they are comming at night. Go with a (smaller if its just you)flashlight and .22 with a scopeat night. They will probably be by your feeders if you have them up or just spotlight the fields and you'll find them.
