TC renegade breechplug info.
Need info on removing TC renegade breech plug
and if anyone knows a source for replacement breech plug. Thanks |
They were never designed to be removed at all unless for some unforseen reason then they recommended only by a smith.Indexing them and not ruining the threads would be a concern. They are available and there are some brave souls on m/loader forums that have done it.It ususally takes a massive amount of leverage to do.Call Dixons in Pa for advice.Track of the Wolf and Dixie Gun Works are a couple that comes to mind.

have them; the mould their supplier was using finally wore out. they do still have plugs for flintlock and some other models. I didn’t know indexing would be tricky. Got drill bit and taps from them to drill out and re- tap threads for percussion cap nipple. gunsmith slightly off on drill bit angle so fix didn’t work. thanks again, GOOD OLE BOY! |
You could probably send your barrel to Bob Hoyt in Fairfield PA and he can make one for you. Getting a Breech off a Renegade as said earlier usually takes 3 men and a boy and a long pole for leverage! T?C made a special rectangular jig that fit over the barrel so you could get a big wrench over it. I changed my cousin's percussion Hawken over to flintlock but it took a massive amount of effort to loosen it. Pouring Liquid Wrench down the bore and letting it sit for a few days then locked in a solid vice a big pipe wrench and a 6 lb sledge hammer finally broke it free!
I will never ever do that again. |
It takes special tools to remove them, there have been MANY MANY of these Old Barrels/Breech plugs RUINED by people trying to Remove them.
I bought the Proper Tools to remove them. Rice Octagon Barrel Clamp for Bench mounted Vice http:// Magnetic on back side to hold in Bench vise Jaws http:// http:// http:// Breech Plug Sockets, i have them in 13/16, 15/16, and 1” These were made by TC, or for TC http:// My Reed Corp Wrench, Makes EASY work of the Job, The Key is having proper Tools, DON’T attempt this without them http:// http:// |
Yep,I/Lewis got the right tools.I,m pretty sure that T/C hasn,t offered the wrench in a coon,s age.I,ve seen where the aftermarket had em.That barrel clamp is the cat,s meow.
