Bang Flop With A .50 Patched Round Ball

Killed this spike buck Monday evening.

Distance: 35-40 yards
Attitude: Broadside
Gun: .50 TC New Englander rifle
Bullet: .490 round ball
Patch: Drill Cloth
Powder: 90 grains of Black MZ
Cap: Winchester #11

Decided on a high shoulder shot. Heard the ball hit, the buck went down, kicked for about 15 seconds and expired.

Way to go. That's going to be a good eating deer. Don't you just love when a plan comes together?

The older I get, the more I see the reason the old man started going for high shoulder. Bad knees + bad back does not equal fun tracking. I have shot a couple of deer that were nice enough to run towards the truck but that sure isn't the norm. Looks like a good eating fella you got there Falcon. Nice shooting. By drill cloth do you mean that stuff that is a bit similar to denim? Never crossed my mind to try it in any of my smokers. Looks to be a bit to heavy for any of my front loaders except maybe one of the Lyms which is a bit on the large side of the .50 scale.

Did you recover your ball?
i looked in the pile but found nothing. Ball may have come apart when bone was hit. There was an 1 1/2 inch hole inside the rib cage.
