Hatfield .50 Caplock (Oops, I did it again!)

One of those "I don't need it but can't pass it up" deals.

Very nice! Is that custom or company built? Never saw a company built Hatfield Rifle. That should be fun to shoot.

Semisane 06-24-2017 09:14 PM

So far as I can tell it's by the original Hatfield company before they started using Pedersoli to build for them.

There are no markings on the top or side of the barrel - no name, no caliber, nothing. There is a number on the underside of the barrel as shown below.

I don't know how you fall into these deals my friend. That's a fine looking rifle.

Muley Hunter 06-25-2017 06:02 AM

Purdy gun. Now that's a long sighting plane I could use.

Semisane 06-25-2017 09:12 AM

You would like it Muley. The rear sight is 11.5" forward of the breech plug and works well for tired old eyes. Also the 39" barrel is a slim 7/8" across the flats. The gun weighs 8 lbs. even.

Muley Hunter 06-25-2017 09:15 AM

I would like it. Even though i'm a Hawken kind of guy I do have a soft spot for long rifles.

Oldtimr 06-25-2017 09:25 AM

Some pretty wood on that long gun as well. I will give you $200.00 for it.

Beautiful rifle Semisane. But have you checked that twist rate? That is an awfully shallow angle from the picture. Looks closer to 1:60 but that could just be my poor eyes or picture tricks.

Semisane 06-25-2017 11:53 AM

Checked and double checked hunters life. It's 1:48. Actually I was surprised. I guessed it would likely be something like 1:60 or 1:66 when I bought it.

Muley Hunter 06-25-2017 12:25 PM

Colerain is 1-56 for .50 and .54. The .58 is 1-66.

The 1-48 on a .50 that every rags on may not be so far off afterall.

Hawkens were all 1-48. Of course, all these are deep groove for PRB.

Oldtimr 06-25-2017 12:38 PM

Oh sure, what a bunch of guys, trying to edge me out! $210.00 and that is my final offer.:happy0157:

I didn't want to disappoint you.

I had a .50 Hatfield but traded it for a Franchi O/U, still have the .36 Hatfield. Mine didn't have the brass muzzle cap. Very nice wood. My 50 had a Cherry stock and the 36 has striped maple .
