Browning Cobra II recurve

Just won a Cobra II by Browning on Ebay and was wondering if anybody owns or owned one and what their opinions are about the bow

It's by Browning' I thought they quit making them years ago. I bought a used t/d and it kept breaking strings. When I called them they said it was recalled and sent me a Timber Wolf ( a compound). That was about 10 years ago. Can you find a pic of the bow to post?

I don't remember if I ever owned one of those, but I have owned at least one or two old Browning recurves. Pretty good shooters as I recall--I think another company made the bows for them, but I can't remember for sure.

Good luck, and have fun!

I had one about 20 years back, but I never got to shoot it. It's bottom limb was too twisted to be fixed. But I kept it on the wall for a long time because it was just too pretty to thow away. Finally gave it to an archery shop for their display of old recurves.

Looks backwards. ;) I Don't know anything about the bow but being a southpaw ya can't be too picky sometimes. I've seen a couple on there that i'm going to bid on by the 27th but I've never bidded on e-bay before but I just signed up. Do people ever bid at the last minute to get there merchandise? I'm still not sure how it works. Anyways, good luck in shooting, Bobby

Bobby - I can't tell you how many times I've been beat by someone bidding at the last minute LOL

After three years of ebaying, I can tell you that the item you are bidding on will come up again (or one just like it), so don't sweat it if you are outbid. I always go with a decent limit price, and if I get out bid prior to the end, if I really want it I post another bid... if not, then oh well..

Its fun, but it can be addictive... got too many bows now according to the wifey

I've seen a bow go from $45 up to $300 in the last 2 minutes of the auction. It depends on how many folks are watching that particular bow and whether you want to spend more than they do.

RE: Browning Cobra II recurve

Browning introduced the cobra in 1968. In that year, there were no "I's" and "II's", just "cobra". The bow was very short at 50" amo. Pricewise, the bow msrp'd for $64.50 which put it on the same level as the company's top hunting recurve, the explorer II.

The "I" and "II" designation came the following year, with the original cobra becoming the "cobra I" and a longer model (58" amo) being designated as the "cobra II". I consider the cobra II to be one of the best of Browning's recurve line--along with the explorer II and the fury II (made only from '72-'74).

In more than a century of existence, Browning has manufactured few of their products themselves and recurves were no exception. In the sixties, alot of Browning's operations were in St. Louis, MO. I have heard some say that Browning recurves of the day were made in the same shops as hoyt recurves, which were also based in St. Louis at the time. I've never been able to verify this. Some models may have been made in St. Louis, perhaps all, but I've never been able to get a name--could be several makers.

I have what I consider to be a fairly reliable source tell me the cobra line specifically was manufactured by a company in San Diego, CA. Its possible all of their recurves were made there. This makes more sense to me since Browning's entry into the archery market in 1962 was precipitated by the purchase of Silaflex fiberglass out of California.

You have a fine bow, one of the best models of the pre-compound era. But I'm sure you'll find that out for yourself.
