longbow - recurve arrow question

Here is my question - I have a recurve that is 63#@27 - shoots 27 1/2" poc 60-65# like darts - With my longbow - 60#@28" I need a 30-1/2" arrow at 60-65# to get good flight - If I go to a 55-60# poc can I get it down to 27 1/2" lenght for my longbow or do I need to go to 50-55# poc?- or am I going the wrong way with spine?

Both bow shooting fastflight - My draw is around 26.5" from what I can guess - My broadhead touches the back of my finger at full draw

Thanks guys been a while since I was here -
still lurking though

RE: longbow - recurve arrow question

The rule of thumb is about 5# of spine for every inch of draw, so 45-50 or 50-55# spine should get you where you need to be. Recurves usually have the shelf cut deeper and will allow you to shoot a heavier spine vs. most longbows that are cut to center, or just shy of it.

Chad- So you are saying to try some 50-55# in my bow that is roughly shooting 58# with a fastflight string? I always thought you added 8 lbs to spine for fastflight?
Thanks

RE: longbow - recurve arrow question

Going by what you have said on the arrow length, I think so. When you shorten the arrows, it increases the effective spine. Knocking 1 1/2" off that arrow length is increasing the effective spine by 7 or 8#. Every bow is different--your shooting style and release will also make a difference.

RE: longbow - recurve arrow question

Hope this helps you out. When I got my Crusader from Chad, I bought 65-70 spined arrows cut them 28.25" BOP like all my others, and shot the bow, only to find out I wasn't drawing all the way back. So ineeded to lengthen the arrows so I cut them so I had about a 1/2" clearance when at full draw, which I now have an arrow that is right at 29" BOP. and this made the spine right at the edge with a 125 grain point. So I upped the spine to 70/75 same length, but I can now shoot a 160 grain head. Yes the other arrow shot, but I was gettting erratic results. the increase inspine solved that.

For you, If your arrows ar 27.25" then go down a spine group. I have some 55/60 spined 28.25" POC ready to shoot if you would like to try a couple before you buy a dozen? shoot me an e-mail and I will send them out. I do thik 50-55 will be to weak, but I may be wrong also.
