choosing wood type for custom bows
 

The bowyer who built my longbow had me choose the types of wood I wanted my bow built from. I chose coca bola limbs with bubinga for the riser and clear glass laminations. If I do decide to have a 48" recurve built can anyone suggest specific wood they prefer for both limb and riser, and pros and cons.

Yew or black walnut for the limbs--light mass weight, great recovery, durable. Downside--yew isn't always the fanciest wood, and dark woods like black walnut will show flaws in the glass more. Veneer will remedy either one.

Riser wood--I like cocobolo, chechen, Bolivian rosewood--heavy woods, if the bow has a smaller riser, for stability. Down side--they cost more.

Thanks Chad. I got that backwards it is a cocobolo riser and bubinga limbs. I once found a web page that listed many of the types of woods used ,showed a small picture and listed a short statement about the woods characteristics. Has anyone out there seen or heard of such a place? Where? I thought it was on the three rivers web site but I could not find it again.
