Broadheads
Hello All,
Over on the Leather wall I followed a thread on 2 vs 3 blade broadheads recently, were a guy switched a couple years ago to a 3 bladed I think WW even tried the Snuffer to I think, and his loss rate went up:(. It seems that more at least in that thread prefer 2 bladed than three due to penetration issues. Now when I made the switch to trad gear I chose the magnus 2 bladed broadhead, and even the vented one and didn't even think about a 3 bladed head. Now I start to think about getting and shooting 3 bladed head, mainly thinking about the Snuffer 125 grain maybe 145 later on, and after reading that thread I don't know now. My bows are longbows, one at 60 pounds(yes I gained that other 3/4" I lost:D), and my other is a 55 pound bow, currently shooting cedar arrows. What are all you shooting? and what is your view on the two types? I have 3 years to experiament if needed, but the British don't like us shooting broadheads here.[&o] |
RE: Broadheads
My two bits: Can't come to a conclusion based on one person's experiences. A two blade or 3 blade will work fine (even a 4 blade), as long as you get the penetration needed and put it in the right spot. Some folks prefer multiple blades for a better bloodtrail, some prefer 2 blades for penetration. With either of those bows, you should do fine on whitetail size game on down with either. On hogs, a lot of people prefer 3 or 4 blades due to the hogs being too tough or stupid to know they are dead and keep on going, and the wound seems to close faster with 2 blades due to fat. Again, I don't think you will have any problems with either of your bows using either head. There is another view on 2 vs multiple blades--you are more apt to get a pass-through with 2 blades, which should leave a better bloodtrail than a single hole with multiple blades--especially on a hard angle, as with a shot from a treestand. Finally, in theory anyway, 2 blade heads don't seem to sting as bad so the animal is less apt to head for the next county when shot.
On real big game, I can't say from experience (yet), but I will use a 2 bladed head. When I go for moose again, I may choose a low-profile 3-blade like the WW, but for the buffalo hunt it will be 2 blades off of an 85@30 Crusader. You poke a hole in both lungs, regardless if it's a rabbit or elephant, it will die. The size of the hole isn't nearly as important as penetration. Just a personal thing I reckon. Right now I'm using 2 blade heads. They fly great, and the deer I shot with them last year went down in sight (aprox. 30 yds). I know my bow would put a 3 or 4 blade completely through a deer just as well, but so far it ain't broke so I won't fix it. Hope I didn't make it more confusing. Chad |
RE: Broadheads
Thanks Chad, no it is not more confusing, every time I get ready to try either the Snuffer or WW out a couple posts will come out that will make me think twice about switching from 2 blade head. Heck maybe I should just buy some and test them out on something.

RE: Broadheads
Well, I am going to try some 160 grain Snuffers to see what happens.

RE: Broadheads
Longbow I might reccommend the RAZORCAPS 3 blade head as well. While I use Magnus two blades I would use the razorcaps as my three blade choice.

RE: Broadheads
I use Black Hawk 3000's, Carbonwood at 29 and 3/8ths.. with a 2 blade 125 gr Magnus vented. and have no Problems with Penatration . I shoot a Chek Mate falcon Deluxe 46 lb at 27 in . I draw 28.5 so Im at about 50 LBs. I ahve had Pass thrus on Bear and Mulies, at 15 to 25 yards. But have had good penetraion even if hitting ribs. Most of the time they break ribs and touch the otherside

RE: Broadheads
Longbow, Those big 160s take a lot of horse power to get full penetration. I think you would be better with 125s or the WWs...........just my 2cents!
