Favorite Longbow?

Mine has to be my Green Mountain. Anyhow what is your favorite?

I'd have to vote for the Adcock ACS.

I mostly shoot recurves and I still have a Robertson flatbow, but the best longbow I ever had was a Stotler Gamebuster. One heckuva an ugly bow but that thing shot so good for me.I really regret getting rid of it.

RE: Favorite Longbow?

Well I tried a few and still prefer recurves but to pick one longbow I would have to say a chek mate longhorn.

My current favorite longbow is the one I glued up on my friend's form and finished out on my patio. :)

An Art Adkins that I helped build. Like Arthur, when you've got your own labor in it, the bow becomes something special.

My all-time favorite is my Chek-Mate Crusader, 66", [email protected], yew limbs and cocobolo riser. I've owned and shot this bow longer than any I've ever owned--going on 6 or 7 years now, I think. No idea how many longbows I owned before I got it, much less how many I shot. (had 30-something personal bows at one time)

Others I've shot and liked were Roy Hall's and Rick Anderson's. Several others that have gotten a lot of attention in the last few years that I want to try out if I can ever get a chance--don't have nearly as much time to play at shoots as I used to.

I love my little Windstorm Chinook, it shoots really smooth even at only a 54" length.

BobCo, your Adcock is really neat lookin', where did you get it? That is a beautiful bow!

First it was my Elburg Cherokee, then my J.D.Berry came along, then it was my Tiger shrew, then my Elburg Mite, and now my Pronghorn that showed up a few months ago.

Right from OL Adcock himself, it's custom made. The riser is the darkest gaboon ebony he could find and has black glass strips. The limbs are tonkin cane, black glass and carbon, and the overlays are the brightest red Chakte Kok he could find.

Shoot me an email if you need to contact him.

Shooting a Thunderhorn Heartstopper right now that is a good shooter for me and ordered a new Morrison Shawnee with Cougar limbs at the Compton shoot that should be done in about 6 weeks.

RE: Favorite Longbow?

Well when I ordered mine, I asked for 55#, got 56# but I'd take anywhere from 50-60. I know with the earlier ACS's he had a hard time getting them within the proper poundages, but I'd imagine by now, he would have them all worked out.

arrowsmit 07-15-2004 12:39 PM

RE: Favorite Longbow?

Bob, according to OL the newer 'CX' ACS limb (no glass, 'boo & carbon only) takes a completely different set of recipes & I'm not sure if he has all that completely worked out yet...but my bow's gonna make weight...I just KNOW it's gonna...no doubt...absolutely...

...MAN I SURE HOPE IT DOES!!! Hehehe

BobCo19-65 07-15-2004 01:10 PM

RE: Favorite Longbow?

Wow, I just noticed that OL is no longer taking anymore orders. Good thing you got yours in.

arrowsmit 07-15-2004 05:23 PM

RE: Favorite Longbow?

Yep, he quit takin' em. Looks like the ACS is the "hot" bow right now, & he's swamped w/orders... I guess the deal w/Morrison didn't slack OLs orders up as much as he wished & I reckon he's trying to get caught up some. Even as much of a backlog as he has, it's still a very upstanding thing for him to do IMO. Not everyone would just quit taking ppl's deposits & I (for one) am impressed by that.

Just heard from da man & "Thumper" made weight!!!! After more grip shaping, final sanding, & finish it should ship sometime late next week, YEEEEE-HAAAWWW!!!

We've been trying to get a deal closed on a new house & man it's been a real PAIN! Sure is great to hear some GOOD NEWS!!

Sounds good Vic.

Right now my favourite bow is my Wesley Special (man I like this bow) followed by my Martin bushmaster which would be a keeper if it were 2 inches longer.

RE: Favorite Longbow?

Well it's here!!!;):D

Karen & I just got our matching Adcock longbows in the mail today! Now I don't dare open hers, but I've spent most of the morning shooting mine & WOW!! I was amazed at how easily the bow tuned. 64" & 54# @ 30", "Thumper" shot a wide variety of fletched arrows very well, but absolutely loves 80-85# RRA tapered cedars! An 84# bareshafted nicely & the fletched ones fly like darts! Broadheads tend to slice fletching off of field point arrows in the target butt. [:'(][8D]

I'm extremely impressed w/this bow, it exceeds all of my expectations, & I admitedly was expecting a lot. This one has it all; smoothness, speed, stability, quietness, & shoots right where I'm looking. So far the Bevelok is great too, it's my 1st one & after a few hundred shots today it held together fine. Heck, looking at it or shooting I can't tell it from a 1 pc bow.

Bob, I'd post some pics but my 'puter is on the fritz & I can't open the dang program to DL from my camera. [:o]

Actually that's a pic of Karens bow. It was one of the 1st CX's OL made & Karen tested it for a couple mos. before deciding that was the one she wanted. We sent it back to be refinished & I had OL make mine to match.

BTW, the limbs are black, I donno why they came out that color in the picture.

Man Vic, I'm jealous! Shoot, with what you have spent on bows lately I'd be 1/2-way to Oz for my water buffalo! [:@] Guess I'll have two bows to check out at the KK next year![8D] I should have "The Whizzer of Oz" (the 85@30 td Crusader I have on order) by then, I might even let you hold it while I put your bows to the test.;)

Congrats bro! Know you will break in it right this coming season. Now, if I could just get Betsy to start shooting a Crusader......but she is tickled with her td recurve [:'(] and doing really well with it.

Chad, the only $$ I've been out [lately] is on the BW 'curve. That's one good thing about OL's long 2 yr + wait, it makes the bow(s) much more affordable.:D

Well, I'm out the door on the way to Canada on a company venture, be back Monday or Tuesday. Keep em straight y'all.;)

Coming from a complete novice in Traditinal archery, but the workmanship on those bows looks beautiful. If it shoots half as good as it looks you'll be sitt'n pretty!

Well, back from Niagra Falls. Man, whatta great trip we had!

Anyhooo, got in late yesterday evening & still had enuff light left to step out back & fling a few RRA tapered cedars outta 'Thumper'! Man, Adcock makes an awesome bow!

My plan was to tune/detune my new longbow & my recurve until both shoot very close to the same (for me), then take 'em on an upcoming (Sept '05) caribou hunt & attempt to kill a nice bull w/both bows. Would that be awesome or WHAT!!? Now I figured it would be fairly difficult to get both bows shooting the same POI at 20 yds, but they already shoot very very close. I may (or may not) need to do a tad more tweeking on one or the other before I'm completely satisfied, but it's looking like getting the bows to shoot together is gonna be much easier than I had anticipated! YEEEOW-ZAAA!

RE: Favorite Longbow?

Chad,

Have to say the 2 piece Crusader is also my favorite longbow, and my 2 piece Attila is my favorite short recurve. Love the "black look". The Attila will outshoot a BW SAG. It did my Widow, anyway.. Sold the BW and really don't miss it..lol..
Good shooting to all of you..
