Thunderhead broadheads?
I'm new (again!) to traditional archery. I finally gave up my compound and picked up my 55# Recurve for hunting.
I have a supply of 100gr. Thunderhead broadheads left over from my 70# compound. I'm wondering if these will work for hunting this fall. Has anyone used Thunderheads or Satellite Mag broadheads with any success out of a traditional bow? Thanks. |
RE: Thunderhead broadheads?
hey,
i'm in the same situation. I'willnot hunting with my compound this year, i've got take my recurve ! I use Steelforce Hellfire 150 grs, because i founf the 125 grs 're to light for traditionnal shooting. I shoot : Prédator 2 recurve 63 Lbs @ 30 inchs A/C Kinetic 400 at 31 inch lenght 5,5 inch helical trueflight feather Steelforce Hellfire 150 grains @+ Fred France |

First, a belated "Welcome!" to Fred--glad to have you on board!
Ccropley, I like to keep an arrow weight of at least 8 grains per lb of draw length. If your arrow weight is enough, and they fly perfect, the Thunderheads should work on game at least the size of whitetail. I'm partial to 2-blade heads myself, but know of folks that have had great success with 3 or 4 blades. I shoot a 125 grain broadhead myself. My longbow is [email protected], my arrows weigh approximately 9.5 grains per lb of draw, and on the whitetail I shot last season I got 7 5/8" penetration into the ground, after the arrow passed through the deer. Haven't had any dealings with the Sattelite broadheads in many years--not sure if the quality is there or not. Chad |
RE: Thunderhead broadheads?
52# longbow, 500 grain total weight arrows, 3 blade Thunderhead 125's and an 18 yard shot on a 250 pound KS whitetail

That's one honker of a hole Stealthycat ,
it looks more like a spear made it ! :D |
RE: Thunderhead broadheads?
kevin1 - Amazing the damage done, huh ? Shot through one side, and the broadhead was sticking out the other. Deer rna 50-60 yards, killed over in about 8-10 second ....
Can't ask for more than that, can we ? |
RE: Thunderhead broadheads?
Thanks for the advise and feedback! Judging from the hole left, in Kevin's Buck, the choice really comes down to what flies best...
I'll do some more experimenting with arrow flight and make the choice based on what I learn in testing. Thanks for the help and insight! |

RE: Thunderhead broadheads?
ccropley,
I haven't used the 100s' but I've been using the thunderhead 125s' since 1986. I have taken numerous whitetail deer and wild hogs with them. I have never had one fail me. I resharpen them after every shot and have used them over and over. I have tried the same type broadhead from sattelite and have not had any problems with them either, just partial to NAP products. I use both a 55 lb recurve and a compound set at 65 lbs and they shoot well out both bows. dog1 |
