My release sucks!!!
 

Wally made me some new arrows, and I've been shooting them quite a bit. These ones actually go straight, go figure. The problem I'm having is in my release. I shoot with a glove, I don't really like tabs. The string is currently just behind the pads of my fingers. And the release just feels chopped or clumsy. Like a car going over a speed bump at 50 mph. It's not the bow, I shoot a Crusader, so it's definately me. Anyone have any suggestions of what I should do different? Maybe time for a new glove?? Thanks

set target at chest height, back off 1 arrow length, close eyes concentrate on back tension and nothing else. this helped me, as matter of fact this little practice method woorks for any type of form building.

yuppers..cant agree more!!! Dont think about your release much either, just let it happen, if you start yanking, jerking, whatever, go back to shooting with your eyes closed working on that one aspect even if its at the 20 yard bale!!! Your shooting will immensly get better!!!

JRP, by "just behind the pads" do you mean at the knuckle? If so, I find I get a smoother release if I grip closer to the finger tips.

First let me say that you're not alone with this problem, ALL of us have had this problem at one or many times.Dan is right on, thinking too much about your release will drive you nuts,much to better consentrate on your target,and just let the release 'happen'.I also think that the closed eye thing is a good idea. lilhunter- 20 yards eyes closed? You are the MAN, the Michael Jordan of trad archery! hehehehehe or arrow RICH.
Juniorpedal-This is probabaly the best advice I was ever given (the one step eyes closed practice). No matter what aspect of my shooting has BROKE DOWN a little time doing this usually corrects the prob. It could be that you need a new glove but that is a trap I got out of a long time ago, throwing more money at a MENTAL problem never lasts long. Yes traditional archery is a mental problem no matter what anyone tells you it is an addiction, WHEW I HAD BETTER SLOW DOWN I almost started a RANT! I had better go take my medicine (THREE SHOTS) AT MY LAST POSTAL MATCH TARGET!

I think its the latter, arrow rich, that or just plain ole dumb LOL...it is however how I got rid of Target Panic! Being its a fear of missing, once I started getting comfortable hitting the 20 yard bale eyes closed, my groups got tighter then they ever had been!!! Now if I could only do that looking LOL! Now doing a 6ft jump, backwards, shooting between my legs, THEN I would be Michael <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>!!!

Furgeson's book &quot;become the arrow&quot; has an excellent description of the perfect release( he'd know if anybody does) It works for me. He says to make a hook of the fingers before you start the release, and when anchor is reached, relax the entire string side of your body.

Maybe you need to back off a little with the finger about mid way.
as with sshooting a rifle or a hand gun tis will keep from getting the string jump as you release.
