Longbow vs. Recurve
 

Just wondering why some people prefer a longbow over a recurve and vice versa. I currently shoot a recurve and have never really shot much on a LongBow. I guess that my first bow was a recurve and I have not used to much of anything else. But, I am going to buy a longbow and use it for a while just to see what I like better. I really don't believe that you can tell which one is better suited for you with only a few shots. Input would be appreciated.

I shot a recurve also when I started trad. Loved it to death. Got my hands on a longbow and the itch started buring. Took a couple years to finally get a longbow that was worth a hoot and never looked back. Dunno why but I have to say its a ton bettern shootn my curves. I think my bob lee has a layer of dust on the top limb LOL!

BobCo19-65 - I have an OL Adcock longbow, and I'll put it up against any recurve or longbow out there as far as smoothness of draw, shock/vibration and quiteness. Its a pleasure to shoot, and if/when I find a recurve/longbow thats smoother in those aspects, I will buy it. Thats what I want, a bow that pulls smooth, is shock free and quiet, and delivers the arrow well. Thats why I shoot my Adcock longbow. The next closest bow for smoothness would be my buddied SAII, but its not quiet and has a little vibration even though its quite a bit heavier. But then, I aint shot all the bows that are out there either, I might one day find one I like better .....

hey STealthy, if I ever make it to Rkansas I'll have to hook up with ya. My ole crusader is super nice to draw, no hand shock, prudy simple to quiet and quick to boot. My newer one is a bit quicker (its also 4lbs heavier) but it feels much stouter in the draw then just 4lbs heavier! Have to move my nock point up a bit and I'll get back to ya. Also a scweet shooting bow as far as quiet and no hand shock though!

I started with a recurve too and then went to the longbow. Most recurves feel alien in my hand anymore. I like the way the longbow feels in my hand, I like how quiet and easily pointed they are and I especially like the looks of them. I own two. A classic D style all bamboo and osage longbow by a bowyer named Don Brown who passed away last August and a Chek-Mate Crusader R/D longbow that is my primary shooter.

I've always shot a 'curve, but bought a Sentman Competition longbow (Hill-style) two months ago.

I shoot the recurve much better, but seem to have more fun with the longbow. There's just something magical about a longbow...kinda hard to explain.

I used to shoot recurves until I bought my first Howard Hill Wesley Special. Nothing better than hiking in the woods with my bamboo longbow and some poc arrows.

My first trad bow was a TD recurve and I still like it a lot. Shot a longbow a few years ago and really loved the way it felt and shot; absolutely LOVED how much it weighed (little of nothing). The recurve is lite but still heavier than the LB, possibly due to being a TD and having a heavier riser because of it. Finally was able to get a custom longbow a couple weeks ago and love it now. (Haven't shot the recurve since but I'll let you know how it feels when I do. I'm trying to get to where I feel confident enough with the LB to go on a last-ditch deer hunt before the season closes.)

I started with recurves. Over the past year and a half or so I have read much on this forum about longbows, and ChekMates in particular. I decided to see if I could find a used Crusader.

While looking, I noticed that Arrowsmit was selling some of his longbows so he could buy another one. I sent an e-mail inquiring about the bows he was selling.

One of the bows, a Fox reverse handle bow sounded intruiging, so I asked for more info. He sent 5 pictures and in the time it took me to open the 5 pictures, I decided the Fox needed a new owner, ME!

Since I received the bow, I have found it to be very sweet to shoot and it is a beauty to boot. From what I've seen, I don't believe Arrowsmit buys any ugly bows!

I have also found the Fox to have a quality I have read much about but had not experienced until it was in my hands. It has excellent "pointability"! If I focus on a point on the target, come to fulldraw, hold and focus, focus, focus, the arrow goes where I am focusing.

As best as I can describe it, that IS pointability! My recurves did not have the quality. Perchance I should restate it by saying I was unable to bring out that quality in the recurves. I am quite sure that in the hands of a master, all bows have that quality. I just know that in MY hands the Fox has that quality.

Cool Bill, glad to hear that you're getting along good w/that bow! As far as which (curve or lb), I like em both...
