Dan Quillian Longbow Kit?

Hi, Guys:

I was just wondering if any of you had any experience with this bow, which I just ordered from Dan Quillian. It is his Longbow Kit, with a Hickory-backed Cherry bow. I am also ordering arrow shafts and accessories. I know this bow will not have the performance of a glass-laminated longbow, but thought the 50-55# range should be adequate to get re-aquainted with Trad. :)

I had been doing alot more recurve shooting with a Martin Hunter, and with the best recurve I have owned, a Hollenbeck. Then I went out and messed up my shoulder crashing a Mountain Bike. I want something new to play with, now that I have my compound situation stablilzed and in need of no more tinkering.;)

Thanks in advance for the replies.:)

No opinions on an all-wood bow of hickory/cherry construction?:(

I believe my longbow is hickory for a part but i dont know for sure.
Its a Earl Hoyt 55#
I love to shoot it to.
It has a nice strong hold at the back and makes the arrows fly fast.
I shoot it over the shelv and have a handtwisted string on it.
Good luck with yours!

I have hear that these bows are not made by Quillian but by another bowyer entirely. I won' t say which one because some folks may see it as an attack on Quillian (which it is not).

However, I have shot this other bowyer' s work and I think it work just fine so long as you keep in mind that the bow is not a custom self bow. There will likely be some string follow but as an overall shooter it' s not bad at all.

Do Not over draw the bow! Over drawing any self bow is bad for it and these are no exception, destruction of the bow could result.

The bow kit came yesterday. It looks pretty nice, and I am looking forward to the finish job. If I can, I will post a pic when finished, although I tried to post another pic taken with my digital camera on the lowest res. setting, and got the message that the file was too large.:(

I agree, Grey, the Quillian' s shop does not make these, but just sells them. I remember the same type of " kit" being offered by McMahon' s and other places. If this one turns out well, I may get back into making some more self-bows, since I have a source of pretty nice ash again. (Lost my original source when we moved into town.):(

I saw one of these kit bows, only it was cherry backed with bamboo. I' ve seen faster shooting backed selfbows, but it looked good, shot good and would do the job in the woods. I think they' re a great deal for someone that wants a selfbow but doesn' t want to pay for a finished out bow and isn' t too sure about making one from scratch.
