Books U Have read?

another post got me to thinking, DANGER! DANGER!
what books have you read and would recommend after reading?
I have recently completed Come November-Wensel, Bows on the Little Delta- St. Charles, Instinctive Shooting 1&2-Asbell, Become the Arrow-Ferguson, and at this time I am reading The Witchery of Archery-Thompson. All are great in there own respect and would rec all. As far as a book that is a celebration of archery in it's simplest truest form The Witchery of Archery has really got my blood boiling, it really takes you away. Come November-Wensel, I will never buy another deer hunting TACTICS magazine again this book covers it all if you take what is written and apply it to your area and style.

I have read Asbell 1 & 2 and Kidwel's Instinctive Archery. While I found Asbell's books to be of great benefit to help me get started in traditional archery, Kidwel's book helped me get over the hump and really get into shooting instinctively. I would recommend Asbel 1 and Kidwel's book. I didn't get much out of Asbell 2.

Asbells "Instinctive Shooting 1" Good starter on shooting.
"Trailing a Bear" by Bob Munson. Down to earth stories about his hunts with Fred Bear.
"Witchery of Archery" by Thompson. Very good book about archery hunting in the 19th century before it was popular.

Has anyone read any of Saxon Pope's books? Would you reccomend them?

I meant Bob Munger in the above post. Not Bob Munson.

RE: Books U Have read?

Lil- thanks on that, I'll have to check the local library & see if they have Gilchrist's book. Geist has a couple more sheep books out as well that I want to read. The man is a walking encyclopedia on North American big game.

Pat- Swan's book does get easier to read. I found it a struggle at times but still an interesting read. He presents some interesting theories but it tends to replay the same message multiple times through out the book using different vocabulary. It does have some great quotes in it.

Kidwel's Instinctive Archery.

His technique is simple and easy to learn, most important it works.

RE: Books U Have read?

while we are on this topic I have a question for those of you who use a public library.
Our public library here in Tupelo MS has numerous books listed in the card file related to hunting, fishing, and trapping. All of these books are missing except swans book. I asked the librarian what is the status of the books whether they are checked out or what, she advised that they had been stolen.
My next question is DO YOU THINK THAT THEY WERE STOLEN by persons interested in the subjects or WERE they stolen by antis?
this really bothers me due to the fact that here in MS I am noticing a great increase of PETA shirts, stickers and the yahoos that wear them.
Have any of you noticed this, also have you noticed a reduction of hunting related magazines in the grocery stores etc.....?????

john nail 02-05-2002 01:41 PM

RE: Books U Have read?

I don't think they were stolen. I would sooner suspect the head librarian. This seems to be a real Liberal Political plumb....

RE: Books U Have read?

Libraries are a sore subject with me. I have gone looking for archery, bow hunting (the ones listed here for example) and fishing books and zip nada none. Now I also look for chess book and there are a few lousy outdated ones but if you look in the same section there are a ton of books on gambling, magic, horoscopes, movie videos for rent etc. all in a brand new big artsy building payed for by my taxes. All show but nothing of use to me except the ten cent photo copier if it even works. We went to New York City a few years back and my wife wanted the kids to see the big main library there so we went. Now the first big beautiful doors we went though where displays of historical documents so we enter with our kids hoping to educate them and boy did we. Now this is big money expensive wood and glass displays for all to see so I start looking at the stuff with my kids and I was shocked as most of it was sexual pictures from the sixties of stuff I can not describe here. Needless to say I told the kids it is time to leave the library which we did. I do not think most people know what is being shoved upon us through the US Library system under art and culture but hunting and fishing topics is not among the garbage I saw there. I get very upset at this waste of money and think the system should get back to collecting all kinds of books not just the ones that the anti hunting liberal library system feeds us. Just had to get that off my chest.

RE: Books U Have read?

Pat, you're right - at least in the case of the drugstores in my area. Nary a hunting and fishing magazine in the entire place; but plenty of WWF, Hot Rod, and beauty mags. If they're merely catering to the customer, it doesn't speak too highly of the average person in my neck of the woods. Or maybe, as you suggest, some anti's have pressured them to remove the hunting & fishing materials. But I have to go to the bookstore to find Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, etc.

RE: Books U Have read?

Interesting comment on your local library. I just did a quick e-search of available titles at our local library and was pleasantly suprised to find:

34-hunting related books
11-books on archery- including one called "Archery Tackle-How to make it and use it"
4-strictly bowhunting books
plus several hunting videos.
The books covered stuff written anywhere from the 1920's to the late 1990's by people such as Capstick through D. Schuh.

Might just have to renew my library card...

As far as the bookstores go I went to the one inour mall here in tupelo MS looking for anyhitng hunting related, found two magazines bottom shelf in back. But what was on the top shelf FRONT AND CENTER? GAY MALE the alternative lifestyle magazine. Needless to say that is the last dollar they will get from me.

I have read several different hunting books and am in the process of purchasing some on traditional archery. Thanks for the info.
If you want some reading that isn't archery, try the "Left Behind" series by Tim LaHaye. It can be found at any bookstore including WalMart.

Lil- they can treat cabin fever at the infirmary can't they? hehehe

John- is it B/W or color, it could be a collectors item maybe you should go on antiques road show with it!

I meant traditional bowhunting books and left one out myself, "THE BIBLE" great book no matter how many times you read it you can always find something new.

I have an autographed copy of Wensel's Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails and I have read it.

Also, I have read Kidwell's Instinctive Archery Insights about 5 times. This is the book that will "get you over the hump" for shooting instinctively as mentioned above. It gets you hitting the target quickly. This is the book that I would recommend that anyone starting out should read and reread. And I think most anyone else would benefit from a read also.

And what does the Bible have to say?

1. Make sure your quiver is full.

2. Shoot all of the arrows!
