crusader wood type question

What do you guys think of a bubinga riser with walnut limbs or maybe elm limbs as a combination on a 62" crusader? Would this combo look good, shoot good? What do you think? Give me your opinion or which combo you would go with? Bow will be 54@26 and 62" one piece Crusader. How do these bow woods stack up when compared to yew limbs? Thanks for you answers.

Hey Strutter, didnt you post this over at the other site and it got yanked? What ever happened to that thread LOL!

Both of my crusaders have yew limbs, both are the td's with the phenolics in the riser so I cant help ya there. My older one is a smooth drawing bow where the new one, 4lbs difference, feels a little stouter, I havent been able to hit the range yet to visually see the difference in the two though. Also I took a string from my older crusader and tried to put it on the new one..man what a difference!!! So much for being able to have 2 bows on a hunt and only needing a couple strings for backup! Cant wait to see how my arras for the old bow flies out of the new one also! both of my bows look great, I like the looks of the newer bow as the yew is definatly more figured and the clear glass is much clearer then on the old one. The older one has some neat red stripes in the phenolics though. The new bow has a red lamb sandwiched in the limbs, cant figure out what that is other then maybe a stained lam (lost track of what wood I thought it was LOL). I do have a robertson with elm limbs, it looks nice. It has a wider grain then the yew on my newer crusader has both are purdy though! I dont think you will have a problem between the woods and shooting difference!!

Thanks for the reply Lilhunter. Yes, that other thread got gone for sure. It's a shame that you can't get an answer due to someone in charge not liking what you are talking about. I am going to order a Crusader and was just curious about the woods. I like a darker look and thought the walnut would fit the bill but all I ever hear about on the crusaders is the yew. My brothers TD has yew limbs and although it is pretty is is lighter than what I find appealing. I also wonder about the peformance difference. Is there any or is it just design and the woods are along for the ride. I have only seen one Crusader in person so I find it hard to put money into something unseen or without any idea what I may be getting. With a wait for one as long as it is, you'd think there would be pics all over the place of all kinds of wood combinations.

sounds good to me, it will look even beter to you if that is what you want.
one thing that I have noticed about the yew in my Crusader is that it is GETTING darker with age and use. when i got the bow it glowed, now the yew has taken on a darker hew. replaced the shelf and strike plate the other day and made my wife take a look at the diff just to make sure i wasn't going crazy but the area covered by the rest was 2-3 times lighter in color than the rest of the woods.
as far as the information nazi's go on the other site i sure wish i could find someone that saved the plans from the thread that got locked referring to making a 10" shaft tapering machine. i guess someone saw $$$$$$$$$$ in there eyes and the spirit of good will and freedom of information exchange went out the window.
i may visit there but i try not to get involved.

I have never seen a crusader in person, let alone with Walnut limbs, but I saw a Northern Mist with Walnut limbs and they were pretty sweet looking. With the dark wood, the clear glass is not as clear looking, maybe a bit frosted looking. It looks good none the less. I have a Chek-Mate hunter II recurve with Elm limbs and they look really good. It had a nice long grain. I really like Zebra wood and Bocote though. I just love those light woods with a dark grain.

I like the Shedua or Imbouya in the standard woods--love the Cocobolo in mine though. Since Yew is no extra in a Crusader, why not get Yew cores with a darker veneer? Walnut is sharp, and really dark. My experience has been like Pat's--the Yew limbs in both my Crusaders has darkened--the older one is a dark golden hue-but you may not want to wait for yours to do that. In my opinion Yew is the best limb wood for a Crusader--mine gains 2.5# per inch--but for a darker wood, go with Walnut or Walnut veneers over Yew cores. The center core is usually actionwood, but you have a choice on that too. If you need more info., you can give me a holler.

my oder bow is also darker. I am also going to,planning is more like it, going to put snake skins on the back of both of them! By the sounds if it, its really not to hard, then again the last time I said that, I ate those words LOL!

Hey Chad, whats the red stripe of lamination in mine? That is what I was thinking was actionwood.

RE: crusader wood type question

Dan, it's most likely actionwood. I believe that is what they usually use, unless something else is requested.

I'm new to yew <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> but the Crusader I got today has yew limbs and they are fairly dark. I was told the bow was 1.5 - 2 years old. (See picture in Got My CRUSADER Today topic.) I certainly wouldn't call it light.
