Opening Day
Well shot a 6 point buck late Saturday but, the loud bone crushing thump was a bad sound. He buckled and ran. I heard him crash twice and snort 3 times. Then all was quiet. Gave him some time to lay down. Found deep turning imprints but no blood. Followed path he ran and found broke arrow with blood on it. 200 grain broadhead and 1 1/2 of arrow are still in him. Arrow has a good 3 1/2 inches of red blood on it. So my two options are I hit shoulder on side I was aiming at since he was slightly hunkered down eating or I hit heart and lodges arrow in opposite shoulder. Giving crashes and buckled take off. I am gonna assume the latter. Of course to make it worse it started raining immediately after I shot him. So after about 3 hours of searching in the rain I called it a night. I am going back in the morning to hopefully find rack at least. On the bright side Mother Nature will eat well tonight.
Well searched some more today with no luck. I do not like losing an animal.
Losing an animal is a sick feeling. Just remember, nothing is lost in nature. Yotes and buzzards got to eat. What is not eaten will be used by plants that will feed something later.
by the way, did you get my P.M. about your question regarding bamboo thickness? I got it kind of late. Since taking office, I have been real busy and don't get to come around here much. |
Yes it is a sick feeling. I still think it was a fatal shot and I will continue to think that until I catch him limping around. No I did not see PM about bamboo thickness. How is thumb ring working out?

The thumb ring is working out pretty good. Got my shot down. Now to find time to get out and hunt. I have to meet with Lawyers this weekend in Lubbock about Annexing a town (fun fun), but on my way home, I am going to try to sneak in a hunt. |
What are you doing now?
Running a science dept. and Mayor of our town. I just cant find enough to keep me busy.
Busy busy lol.
Well I hope everyone else is having better luck than me. I have seen nothing in the evenings. Hoping for some luck in the morning. Looking forward to cool front coming in.
Evenings are too dang hot here--in the 80's. I just don't like to hunt in the heat due to the meat spoiling if you don't find it quick. Saw some movement before daylight yesterday, couldn't tell what it was but after I left the blind there were deer tracks in that spot.
Well hunted yesterday evening and as light was going I decided to climb down. I stood up and a doe blew from behind me. It is a good 30 yards behind me through some trees to the next clearing. I have no idea how she saw me. I believe it is same doe that is always blowing at the slightest sound. She will blow but not move. As soon as you start moving again she'll blow and run a few steps. Then blow again and again. I am going to change my hunting location today and try setting on the trail they come in on. Hopefully I can catch them before they see me.
I got to go out Sat. and saw a lot of deer, just no shooters. All young bucks or does with young fawns. I am surprised, I saw two does with small, late season fawns. Fawns with very prominent spots.
I wish I could say I saw lots of deer. I see them on camera at night just not during the day. I need to make it up your way one day soon.

I went to the woods after work today. I have tons of activity on camera but they have a hunter radar on. They know what time to come out safely.
Coyotes seem to be ruining my spot close to home. Hear them every night in the bottom, only gotten raccoon pics on my camera. Stinks.....
Camped this weekend and had lots of activity on camera but none in daylight. They are feeding at night even with no moon. I know there trails but still none in daylight hours. I had my boys with me. I had a the hunting area covered and still nothing . Four stands spread out over area. Some on feeders but others on trails.

Finally got a chance to go hunt. Shot two doe and saw lots of rutting bucks. Passed a couple of 8 points.
Have not had much luck myself. I am just not seeing movement in daytime
The bucks were full blown rutting. A buddy of mine shot a nice 8 point and the neck was swollen, and the tarsal gland was dark. The two doe I shot were both being chased by bucks. I had to grunt to stop them. I had three different 8 points I could have put an arrow in, and all of them were rutting hard. I hope to get out this weekend. Just hope they have not quit the chase and started holding up with does.
Got to go out for one hunt Sat. night. I was driving in from Lubbock and stopped at my cabin. A buddy, coming from Dallas, was suppose to meet me with my bows. He had car trouble so he did not make it. I had a 44 mag revolver at the cabin so I took it out to hunt. Rattled up this 8 pointer.
