tip for carbon arrows
As we all know it is hard to get the proper alignment for broadheads with a carbon arrow. I did some thinking and here is the best way. If you have a new arrow, ( unfletced ) put the broadhead on first, set it on a flat suface, then turn the knock to the proper alignment , now fletch the arrow. If you you are using arrows you already have then take off the fletchings put the broadhead on turn the knock and refletch.

When I think of broadhead alignment I think of ensuring that the longitudinal axis of the broadhead is in line with the longitudinal axis of the shaft. I don't see how rotating the nock will affect this. If the broadhead is crooked, its crooked until you straighten it. Messing with the nock won't change that. Or am I missing something?

you can not turn the broadhead on a carbon shaft. the insert is not put in with hot glue and when it's in that is it, so with carbon arrows you build it in reverse.

These days I'm prefering aluminum for building hunting shafts, and my competition arrows are wood (longbow) but I have built some carbon arrows and used hotmelt no problems (yet) Sure working time is reduced as the shaft can't be heated, and that is problematic. But couldn't you use epoxy and gain working time to give you a chance to ensure that the broad head is aligned with the shaft? Or are you talking about having the blades of the broadhead match an orientation with the fletch?
Personally I believe that yes there can can be advantages to having the blades in a certain orientation, depending on broadhead style. (2 blade or 3 blade) but I have found that having the broadhead aligned with the shaft is the more critical factor. |
You can use a 24 hour epoxy the others crystalizing. A lot of those glues will do the same and the tips will blow up. Be carefull with any heat on the carbons it can make them week and crack at the tip.
I use a 3 blade broadhead and align the blades with the fletch, so that is why I came up with this idea. PS i am a rotten speller so just pass over my mistakes. Do you have a big healical? If so put an arrow on a flat table and use an arrow you can turn the knock, Put a match stick in the knock and make it stright up and down, now knock it on your bow and look down the shat, do the same with on you did not turn the knock. The one that did not have the knock turned is set up to have the fletching hit the riser. I shoot with a flipper rest , i think it is more critical than the shelf so that is why I turn the knock. |
OK I get it now. you're looking for a specific orientation.
Personally shoot a standard fletch orientation and just shoot cock feather in. Keeps the bottom hen feather off the shelf, and as long as I have decent state of tune, the arrow flex gets the cock feather around the riser. As for the broadhead orientation I just simply don't like seeing a blade stick up into my sight picture. Sure as a gap shooter I could use it as a reference, but seeing it split the picture in half makes me feel cross eyed. |
Interesting, I never look at the broadhead or anything else, just what I am shooting at. I don't gap shoot I spot shoot. It works for me, I have scored as much as 500 in a 60 target shoot. I am not a normal traditional shooter. I shoot with an open hand and a finger sling . second when I get to full anchor I hold it for 5 seconds or so. Last when i release my shooting hand comes back and touches my shoulder blade. It just works for me. I am shooting a 55# bear grizzly and get 200 FPS. It's a great bow.

Raw scores are tough to use as a determinant unless you're shooting a "standard" round such as an indoor 300 or target 900 or Field. I've made over 1100 on 60 targets (longbow woodies off the shelf) BUT it was a 2 arrows per target, scored 11-10-8. I do shoot that particular tournamant from the compound stakes though. Sometimes I'll consider the percentage taken of all possible points.
Anyway, if you're an "abnormal" Trad shooter, it sounds like in way or another you're aiming at what you want to hit AND hitting what you aim at, which puts you ahead of the pack to begin with. |
I don't know about ahead of the pack but I do alright. I only shoot anaimal targets, it's all about hunting for me.

Yep. The way I see it target archery and bowhunting are exactly the same, ...except for those parts that are totally different
