What spine for a longbow?
 

Just got back from a house cleaning/death. Friend's father who taught us to fish, shoot skeet, etc. Anyway, got 3 bows, 2 are martin vision longbows/hybrid recurves, seem almost unused/new, 45 & 55 lbs with strings. Also a old 50lb Bear Kodiak with a leather grip, no string. Also got a bunch of archery tools,doo-dads etc. Seems like he bought the two new ones and never got a chance to use them. Don't know where the arrows went as he was not able to shoot or do much of anything else for the last two years or so and the kids wanted me to have them as I am the only one of us who hunts. I would like to shoot the new ones(the bear may just be a wall hanger even though nothing is wrong with it). What spine arrows should I buy? I would like to get arrows that I can adjust/tune simply by cutting down arrow length and adjusting arrow head weight. I have a 29.5 draw length with a compound bow and have lots of 100 & 125 grain field points and broadheads. I would like to avoid having to buy a bunch of different spined arrows or more field points or broadheads or at least limit it to only one or two different spined arrows which I can then cut down to tune. Thanks for any help. (would prefer rec omendations aluminum arrows as I can more easily cut length to tune)
side note,was a real trip down memory lane seeing the old garcia mitchells, Pflueger sea kings etc along with the conolon and double eyed tonkin cane rods.

With a carbon arrow, you "MAY" get away with one arrow fro those 3 bows, but I really think you will need 2 maybe 3 different spined arrows. With wood, you will need 3.

Your draw will also be about an inch shorter shooting a recurve or longbow than your compound. Good luck, I had a Martin Vision, wish I still had it.

If there is a shop nearby I would take the bows in and shoot some arrows to see what flys well. Most shops have a bunch of arrows laying around that you can try. I'd start with aluminum and feathers.

Thanks , going to take one to a shop and see what they say. Should have specified in post that I wanted spines for each bow not just one. Strung them up and wow. Went out and bought that 3 band bow exerciser. Going to have to up my bow strength if I want to shoot more than 5 arrows during practice. Going to master the 45 lber before even attempting the 55lber. Don't see myself touching it for at least a year. Truly understand why compounds are so much more popular. Take care.

1916 for the 45#, 2016 for the 50# and 2018 for the 55#....all should be tuneable with 125gr heads

Thanks for the recomendations. Been shooting the 45lber with no problems. Seemed a lot heavier the first time i tried it and only used the exerciser 5 times so that didn't do it. After thinking on it I decided to go with carbon arrows. If i am going to go through all the trouble of setting this up I might as well use carbon arrows. I have been using some bare shafts I have scraped up and taken off the vanes, a 32 inch 400 Easton Excel with 125 grain head and a 30.5 inch .340 a/c (my compounds arrow) with 125 grain head. the .340 is angled to the left in the target, 400 seems to shoot okay and is straight but I will try a .500 spine just to be sure. I would like a 31-32 inch arrow. I seem to have the basic idea worked out and will solve it. My real question now is NOISE. I thought these things were suppose to be quiet. Makes sort of a badong sound???? As i shot the 340 to 400 the noise increased. Thinking now the 500 spine will be even lighter and make more noise. Will try and get a heavy GPI 400 and 500 spined arrow like a FMJ to test. Aside from arrow weight and silencers, i.e cat whiskers etc, how do I decrease the noise? Does changing brace height reduce the noise? According to martin website its supposed to be 7.25 to 7.75. its at 7.25 now. Does increasing BH reduce noise, decrease noise, increase speed or what? What am I looking to do with brace height? Also, the string it had was ratty looking so i got a new one, a 66 amo fast flite.

Also I strung up the bear bow and near the tip a piece of fiberglass is lifting which you could barely slide in a piece of paper. Going to epoxy it and clamp it. Can it be fixed that way or is it unuseable? Thanks again.
