Im not making leather out of this one. Im just tanning it and will use it with the hair on. Ive got two more hides that will become leather here pretty soon. |

I see. Its not any harder than making raw. There are several methods. Im egg tanning this one. My last few hides have been brain tanned.
You know this got me thinking. After egg tanning and smoking, could you just keep these stiff to make a quiver? Instead of rubbing them over a board making them soft? Figured that would make a cool quiver. |
Looks like a good start. Ya'll got too much time on your hands! I can't even make time to shoot lately...but I have a teen-ager in the house, my wife just got a new horse, my mule still needs a lot of attention before riding, got 30 grape vines to tend to, will be gardening before you know it, still got a few weeks to hunt, 3-D starts next month, trying to get ready for the new video, got strings to make.....

Yep, you can do whatever you want with them. The only think you might have problems with stiff skins is the sewing. It is not real easy to jab an aw or needle through a stiff skin. The quiver I made last year out of a bobcat and raccoon was left a tad stiff. This skin is going to be real soft. I like to soften them with a broom handle while they are in the frame. It is much easier than using a wire or board. LBR Looks like you are a busy fellow. I dont keep any animals, other than my dogs and teen daughters. I have not shot a bow since the last hog I killed a couple of weeks back. I really do need to get out and shoot. |
She is all scraped, stretched, and softened. Time for some smoke tonight.
