Another Build A Long

This is the build a long for the bow I have donated to StikBowHunter E-Mag.

This is the main wood in the riser it is Shedura, I did not have a piece that was 1 ½” thick so what I done was laminate 2 pieces together.

After the epoxy had set, I marked out the rough shape and seeing I am doing something special for this bow I marked in an arch, the same arch as the riser. Then it was off to the band saw to cut out the inner arch.
I cut just inside of both lines.

Then using the belt sander I sanded to the lines on both pieces making sure everything was square.

Ok what I decided to do with the riser was to make up some Green and Gold linen phenolic.

I also decided on some Maple accent strips.

I did not get any pics of the actual glue up of the riser.

Here is the riser rough cut to shape.

A close up of the Phenolic and Maple accent Strips.

Then I sanded to the lines made sure the limb side of the riser was square. I marked the center line.

Then using the alignment jig I drilled the holes.

Using a ½” tap, tap the larger holes for the locking hardware.

Then epoxy the locking receiver into place.

That’s all I can do to the riser for now.

Now it’s time to think about what we are going to use for the limbs.

This is what I came up with.

On the belly some highly figured Mesquite.

The Back will be some beautiful Black Walnut.

For the wedges I decided on Osage. So we mark the wedge shape.

Then it’s onto the belt sander to grind our wedges making sure you use a scrap block for support because the ends of the wedges have to be paper thin.

Close up of the end of the wedge.

With the wedges made it’s now time to grind the Mesquite and Walnut to thickness.

The Mesquite making a pass through the drum sander.

Kanga 02-01-2010 06:27 AM

Now it’s the black Walnut’s turn.

The sled I am using has a .002” taper per running inch.

Once we have all the laminations to thickness we can finally glue up the first limb.

Place all the limb material into the heat box for an hour to make sure there is little to no moisture left in them.

Then lay the material out in the order that it is going to be used.

Kanga 02-01-2010 09:08 AM

Ok let’s glue up a limb.

Apply some epoxy to all adjoining surfaces.
First the glass then the Mesquite.

Flip the Mesquite over onto the glass apply epoxy to the dry side of the Mesquite and Bamboo.

Flip the bamboo onto the Mesquite
Apply more epoxy to the dry side of the bamboo and wedge the place the wedge onto the bamboo.

Next comes the Black Walnut and yes you guessed it even more epoxy.

Now comes the glass of course after you have applied the epoxy to the dry surfaces

Now comes the fun part, Transfer the limb stack to the form and add the pressure strip.

Secure the stack to the form.

Add the air hose.

Last but not least the top of the form and secure it.

Kanga 02-01-2010 09:10 AM

Add 60 PSI of pressure to the air hose and double check to make sure nothing has moved, if it has then let the air out of the hose and adjust, but remember to put pressure back into the hose before placing the form into the heat box.
Let cook at 180F for 4 hours.

After 4 hours take the form out of the heat box and clean up the excess glue, trim ¼” off the butt end making sure it is square.

Then we can mark our limb shape.

Some guys use their band saw to rough cut the limb to shape, I prefer to use the belt sander as sanding belts are cheaper than 93 ½” band saw blades.

1st limb ground to shape.

Using our Jig drill the holes in the limb.

Now it’s time to do the string grooves.
After I have marked where I want them I use a triangle file to start the groove.

Then a round file to finish them.

Repeat for the second limb.

Kanga 02-01-2010 11:35 AM

Something I don’t usually do is rough shape the riser till the limbs are tillered, but seeing I have another riser un-shaped in the shop I decided to go ahead and shape this riser. Besides that it gave me something to do while the other limb is in the heat box.

All the sanding to the riser from here on will be by hand.

You play rough. Im still trying to get over the hangover from a few weekends ago. I think that was your ploy. You got me hung over, and woke up real early, so i couldnt shoot a bow at the range.:D

RLoving1 02-02-2010 08:38 AM

Thats a normal weekend around here...you should see how my bro does it in Oklahoma!:D

Bob told me. I hope to find out ASAP. That way I can cut some hedges for ya.:D

RLoving1 02-04-2010 03:43 AM

Cool maybe we can find some of Bob's lost arrows while cutting osage!

Kanga 03-03-2010 12:11 PM

I finally got the lams cut for the new limbs after the 1st set developed a crack in the glass.
Here they are ready to be tapered to thickness.

It's Tigerwood and some really nice Maple for the belly.
The wedges are going to be Pecan with Shedura limb butt overlays and Elk Antler tip overlays.
As soon as I can get 2 days off I will get them made and onto the riser.

bigcountry 03-03-2010 01:06 PM

Crack? Crack in glass. If I wanted cracks I would stick with selfbows. :s2:

Why do you think they cracked? Tension?

you ever going to bring back that pecan riser?

Kanga 03-04-2010 02:34 AM

Why do you think they cracked? Tension?
Mark.

I don't think tension had anything to do with. I never got a chance to fit them to the riser:mad:

I think it had something to do with the crazy weather we've had down here.

you ever going to bring back that pecan riser?
Yeah I have a stack of it in the shop cut up into riser block size.
I have not checked the moisture level on them in a couple of months last time I did it was at 15%. I will wait till it gets down around the 8% mark and try another one:s4:

Can we high jack a threat or what? Sorry Russ, I apologize!!
Shame on you Rowel and Kent!!!:action-smiley-099:

Kanga 03-26-2010 08:54 AM

After working 25 days straight they decided to give me a day off so I got busy and made the new limbs.

I'll have to get some better pics when I get my good camera back.

So what do you all think??????????

I love Tigerwood under glass.

Maple

Elk Antler

JerryCavit 04-02-2010 09:59 AM

Looks great. Just a question if do not mind; Are you concerned about all the run offs? I know its a glass sandwich bow, I was just wondering if the run offs are of a concern?

Kanga 04-03-2010 10:23 AM

I was just wondering if the run offs are of a concern?
In a word no:D

Have not had one fail because of the grain run off, the lams are really only there for show, the glass and bamboo do most of the work.

The Rev 04-03-2010 06:26 PM

Bring it over so I can shoot my neighbors house again.. But don't let Rowel shoot it he'll kill another photo album..
hahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahah ahahahahahahhaha

RLoving1 04-10-2010 08:56 AM

Dave.

I think we really should stick to the original plan and hunt Elk:s2:

But hey if we tag out early then we can go looking for wood.

No worries mate just let me know what you want:wink:

gregorybraswell 04-15-2010 04:41 PM

Kanga, what combo of tapers and parallels do you use in your limbs. Have you tried using a automotive cut off saw/wheel to cut out the limbs ? Works fast and is cheap.

Greg.

This model has a taper, a bamboo parallel then a reverse taper.

I have not tried a cut off wheel to profile the limbs, the belt sander with a 40 grit belt is fast as well:wink:
