Anybody Hunting?
Trad section is rather dead. No reports? I had another small doe in my sights (no sights that is) on Sat. But not much after that. I really want to take a mature doe or buck. Had a little basket about 30 yards trashing some bushes, but after about 10min, he looked directly at me.
Waiting for the rut. Wanting to take a deer with my IPE/Boo bow I finished in Aug. Having trouble with consistency. |
That is it. Hunting, not finding. Went hunting earlier and saw a few small bucks, but not a shooter. Was looking for a doe, but did not see a single one. Ill be back at it as soon as I can.

Thinking of running it over a planer and reshaping. Kinda like you do when you put that piece of wood at the bottom. Hope you don't mind me stealing your ideas. But I do believe I did get the shaved head first. |

Kent, thinking of modifying my handle some kinda like you do. I made the handle too small, and kinda digs in my heel of my hand. I made it about 6", but gave the sight window 2" of it. So effectively, I have only 3" of it for my hand.

My season opens sat. I hope I can show some pictures but I know I will have stories See ya Sat night If I am not asleep getting ready for Sunday.

Opened Oct 1st here, but I haven't been out yet. Lots of rain, not much scouting, too much work to do inside and outside the shop.....but it's supposed to be in the 30's either Sun. or Mon. night--that's getting me in the mood quick! I think my neck is swelling......

I hunted for the first time this year Monday afternoon. Had a smaller doe at 18 paces from the base of my ladder, but didn't shoot. I was hoping there were some more deer following her out of the thicket, and perhaps the buck that rubbed the sapling under my tree stand but to no avail. She never winded or saw me, so my spot wasn't blown that night. I'll defiantly be out this Saturday, and hopefully quite a bit next week. School work has been piling up, so it's a big balance to find time to hunt and get the school work done.

Well, good luck to all who goes out. Be sure to post some pictures.

I've been hitting it fairly hard! Seeing a few small bucks, nothing that tripped my trigger! Went out the other day and hung my stand, climbed back down and made a couple mock scrapes. About 45 minutes into the hunt here comes a couple young ones the a 2.5 and a 3.5+ yeard old does. They all went back and forth between both scrapes and staring in the direction they came from. A deer was hold up and wouldn't come in. I had these deer at 10 yards for 20 minutes, pretty awesome! I was waiting on the other deer that wouldn't commit! Good times!

cant hunt till after thanksgiving since I moved and no longer have somewhere to hunt. My brother is bringing me in as guest. I did shoot a possum that was attacking dogs only

Been three days haven't seen much, blaming it on the full moon and wind. Will be starting a 6 day mts trip this weekend which is typiaclly a good trip. Hope to have some stories when we return..

Hunting not the issue, finding is all together a different story.:s2: |

It's so good to be loved! With friends like Rowel and Kent, all I need is Russ ribbing me too.:lolabove:

We never said we love you...we're just doing our community service by keeping old guys entertained! Your a slower target than a one legged deer.:action-smiley-099:

I'm not having a very good season Mark. On my 3rd sit of the year I screwed up on a very nice buck Monday evening, hit him above the spine I believe. Here's a picture of the buck from a week earlier on one of my mock scrapes that I had a trail cam on. I'm about 95% positive It's this buck. 1st ever deer wounded In 24 years of bow hunting.

Wow, he is a nice deer. Can't believe you still have leaves on your trees. You always get to pull something out. Good luck to you.

My son Josh had a picture perfect opportunity on a fat doe last weekend (15 yards). I saw the shot from behind him in the blind and it looked perfect with a nice thud sound. We started tracking her 3 hours after the hit in heavy snow. We trailed her 3/4 mile, and looked for her all afternoon. Next day came and rained and melted the snow. We found his arrow about ten yards from the impact and he got only 3/4" of penetration. His magnus was bent in half along with a nice bend in his arrow. It was nice to find the arrow which gave the tell tail sign of a shoulder hit. I didn't hear a snap, but just a thud, so I am assuming that he didn't break the shoulder. It must have been at the very back of the shoulder blade cause it sure looked like a good hit to me.
Well he experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows all over the course of his first day of hunting. |
I was able to get away Sunday afternoon. Hunted for about an hour and a half. Shot a boar that was around the 300lb range. Only problem, I stuck the arrow in his shield. The bow I was using was one of my longbows, only 58lbs at 28 inches, so I only got about 6" of penetration. He broke off the arrow and ran. I tracked him for about a mile where he went into a hackberry/brier grove. There was no way in the world I could have drung him out of a mile or so Of briers, through trails not high enough for me to do more than crawl. So long story short, no pics. On my way back to my truck, I jumped an racoon, which I decided to take. I didnt take any pictures, but I did skin him and plan on making a hip quiver out of his hide once I finish tanning it. Ill post the quiver when Im done.

I was wondering if one can penetrate that shield. I have only boar hunted once and ended up killing with a 44 magnum. Good luck kent.

It's best to shoot low, it's almost impossible to penetrate with a bow, even with training wheels. |

Trying to get up november 6, 7, 8 for some hopeful rut action> hoping that the full moon on nov 2 and a bit of cold weather will get things going.

May of got a place to hunt. Looking at 40 acres north of big bend ,TX

One of the slowest seasons in memory for me, so far anyway. Weather isn't cooperating, deer aren't either. Talked to an old friend in GA today, that I haven't talked to in quite a while, and was encouraged--got to get with him and set up a pig hunt, and next year maybe a pig/turkey combo hunt--whoo-hoo!

I got up to my cabin for the last weekend and wound up tagging an 8pt on Friday the 13th....10yd shot and piled up within 40yds

Good job Jim. Fine deer. Thanks for the update. Great shot also.
Saw the biggest deer of my life at 400 yards Sat. Every bit of a 160" deer. |
A slooooww season here also? Probably the worst ever for some reason? I think I counted roughly 17 hunts and only had one shot which thank heavens was a good one. A small 5 came in last Friday morning and I was able to get both lungs which ended the track quickly. Other than that I have seen fewer deer this year in the mts than ever?
Dog season opened here last Saturday so for the most part bow season in SE Va is over for the year.. |
