choosing a recurve

whats a good recurve to buy for my first one. I want one for target practice but if I feel comfortable with it I will probably end up hunting with it too. I'll definitley do some goose hunting with it. I have always shot compounds and know nothing about recurves. I was thinking the bear grizzly looked decent.

This is a common question. If scroll down, you'll see many topics dealing with this. In general, I usually suggest going used for the first one. Basically, you will not know exactly what you want for a little while.A used Bear is a great choice. You can usually pick one up a 60" for around $150. Most of them were made about 45#'s at 28", which is perfect for a beginner.

thats makes a lot of sense. I'm in no rush to start hunting with a recurve so I can spend a year practicing and figuring out what I like and don't like. I noticed a lot of recurves on ebay were from the 60's and 70's. Is this ok?

Yes, just be sure to ask about stress cracks and limb twists. Stress crack usually are OK, they usually appear around the fadeouts and run parallel with the limbs. If the crack meet at any point, I would stay away. Limb twists are also common and many can be fixed. I'd also shy away from twists though. Also, for a beginner, I'd stay away from anything under about 60".
