Hardness rating on broadheads.
Does anyone happen to know the hardness rating on Zwickey and Magnus broad heads. My Zwickey heads are near 20 years old and are fairly soft (never knew there rating) meaning they sharpen very well with a file/stone. I have absolutely no problems with them, I like them. However I would like to give the Magnus ( 125/non vented ) heads a go and would like to know there hardness rating to know how I want to approach sharpening them. Changeling |
RE: Hardness rating on broadheads.
I am using magnus 125s and 145s. They are not very hard. Do not have a rating on them, but much softer than stainless. They will need sharpening soon as you buy them. I sharpen mine with a stone and steal.

burniegoeasily, thanks for reply. Sounds like they are about the same as Zwickey's then. Actually I am probably nuts to switch, I better think this over. They even look the same.

Yes, they are very similar to zwickeys. Brothers from a different mother, or in my oppinion.

I know the heads I use are Rockwel 51 on the hardness rating;)
You always try and heat temper them to make them harder. |
RE: Hardness rating on broadheads.
soft or hard, your Zwickeys have a triple laminate tip - I've destroyed my share of heads and I've yet to tip curl a Zwickey
I've doubled over Bear heads, Magnus and several others |

The only problem at least with my heads is you have to use an insert to make it a screw in head and sometimes it can be a PITA to get the heads glued in perfectly straight, sounds simple I know but it is not always that way. If you guys don't do a spin type test to determine this you could be making a mistake. I've never "curled" one but I have bent the heck out of a couple. No big problem straightening them though, just use a hammer and tap them back into alignment. |

I know I have knicked my mangus 125 gr. heads. They fly well and penetrate good.
