Horn Bow question
I have built a couple self bows years ago, I now want to try a horn bow.
As the horn is used for compression only, I being I do not have any long horns, was wondering why I could not use the horn in strips (Like laying a hardwood floor ) I would think it would work but after reviewing several books and many forums I have never seen any reference to having any use of strips of anything except sinew on a bow. Does anyone have any ideas on this? |
RE: Horn Bow question
Ive never made one, but ive had a buddy make one once. I believe the horn is good in tension, not compression. Reason I say this is because he use a gap filling epoxy, thinkened with cavacil, to fill in the horn. The horn took most of the tension while the thickened resine took the compression. I do not see why horn could not be used for backing. Best way to find out is to try.

galew,
check out primitivearcher.com--they have a message board there and I'm sure you'll find alot of info on horn composite bows |
RE: Horn Bow question
Yep. I'd second going to Primitive Archer's site. That is likely the only place you're really going to find good info on horn composite bows. I've never had the patience it takes to even try it.
