This weeks project, new bow

Ive been to busy to really work in the shop. I wanted to make a bow over 60lbs for this hunting season, so i got out the ipe and boo. I glued this bow up a while back and had to finish two other bows. I just got back to this one this week and started tillering it in the afternoons. It is 68" ntn, Reflex/deflex, ipe boo with cocobola handle. 64lbs @ 30". It is tillered, rough sanded, and fine tuned. It just needs to be finish sanded and sprayed.

Man, my tiller tree was setting catty whoompus. Looks like the bow is going to fall over to the right side.:D

This is a very sweet shooting bow, if I say so myself. Ive shot it in already with about 100 shots. Im ready to get this guy bloody. This bow is going to stay here, im not going to get rid of this one.

Russ
I still have not had a chance to rip those curly maple lams for you. Im going to do that tonight. I will be going to Dallas this weekend and might just drop them off on my way or comeing home. Ill give you a call and see what would work best for you. Since you have a planer, ill grind them to 1/8", that way you can reduce them if you want.

Thanks English Hope

Well, I had to post a pic of the finished bow. I had a little mishap with a sharp instrument, so I have not been very busy in the shop. I did manage to put the finishing touches on this bow, but have not had a chance to get that osage boo bow going.

This bow ended up 63lbs at 29".

Here is some future bows.

I had to bring this one back up and question kent some more.

Kent, you told me you cannot just glue on a handle. You said it had to be still to start with. Is this a stiff handled bow?

Yes, this is a static grip bow. I built a little deflex in the handle so it appears to be bending more in the fades thanmost wouldlike. It was a great shooter. They guy who bought it shot his first trad. deer with it this year. I almost hated to part with it.

What makes it static handled? Is the handle significantly thicker/wider? Probably the best looking longbow I have seen in a while.

If I make one, how do I make sure the handle is static so I don't pop off the handle? Guess why I am asking is, there is no defined fades on the main part of the IPE.

Thanks

The handle needs to be thicker than the thickest part of your fade. How thick is the Ipe you are using? If it at least 3/4" you will probably have enought to keep it static. If it is less than 3/4", you might have to go with belly lams up the fades or a power lam. I like power lams and with some woods, I will almost always use a power lam. Osage is a wood I like to use a power lam with. A power lam is a piece of tappered wood that extends a little past your fades, that is glued under the backing. Here is a pic of a power lam on an old Osage bamboo bow I built.

The power lam is the piece of walnut, just under the bamboo. It tappers just passed the fades. This handle is a static grip that I deflexed the handle a bit. The man I made this bow for wanted a thin grip that was easy on the hand. I deflexed the grip and the limbs a bit to help with the hand shock. This bow is actually a tri lam. Bamboo backed osage, with an osage lam up through the fades. I believe it came out 58lbs @ 28". That is, if memory serves me well.

Something else. This bow would not be a good example of putting lams on the belly, up the fades to stiffen the grip. I actually put my grip on top of the belly lams. The handle area is actually a bit concaved. That is how I got the handle a little deflexed. If you want to use the belly lams to stiffen the grip, they need to run up the grip as well.

Nope, I let her go. I sold her about a week after I finished her. The new owner is loving it. He is a family friend, so it was easier for him to talk me out of it. He has taken his first trad deer with it this year. Im down to just one trad bow now. I cleaned house and sold all my bows. Ill got some wood set aside for me a new one. That is, once I get a few other things built.;)
