String size for new-old bow
I scored an old fiberglass static recurve at a local antiques auction recently. It is a sort of marbled brown but has no markings on it whatsoever. It came without a string and I need to get one made. I'm lookingfor a B-50 dacron flemish twist. How do you figure the length? The bow is 65 1/2" tip-to-tip, no idea at all about poundage. Any help is appreciated.

RE: String size for new-old bow
Measure it starting at the "top" of one string groove, along the side of the limb (following the contour of the limb), through the center of the riser, along the other limb to the "top" of the other string groove. It should get a string 3-4" shorter than this measurement. Sounds like an old Pearson. Tough bows, but lots of shock.

RE: String size for new-old bow
Instead of the direct measurement, what counts on a recurve is the length when following the curves of the limbs. Take a cloth tape measure and measure from nock to nock along the back of the bow (side away from you when shooting). When you get that measurement, subtract 4" and that will be the length string you need. Most custom string makers build to actual string length instead of to the old AMO standard.
___ edit: Chad, ya beat me to the draw this time and got in a post before I did. ;) |
RE: String size for new-old bow
OK. First, thanks for the help. I didn't have a cloth tape measure so I used string. It came out to 66", so the string I will need is 62"? Does that sound right?
