Damn Rabbits!!

I've got rabbits (Cottontails) eating my peas in my garden.[:@] Last year I zipped 3 of them with my recurve in 3 shots. The yardages were 20 yards, 25 yards, and 35 yards. Funny thing was the 3 rabbits I got last spring were the 1st 3 arrows I've shot in about 5 months and I couldn't of hit them better.

Well this evening I seen 2 rabbits out there and I snuck with in 31 yards of it and let an arrow fly. I thought I nailed it but I was just short about an inch or so or it moved before my arrow got there. Either way It was right there and just missed.

An hour later it was back. I got with in about 20 yards this time and shot about 3 inches short. I went to look for my arrow and there the rabbit was at about 15 yards. I thought to myself your dead. I don't usually miss at that range. Well you guessed it, I missed!![:@] The arrow went right under his throat. All I had was a head shot and I missed low an inch or so.[&:] Last weekend I was at a Traditional shoot where I shot a good 60 arrows so I can't use the excuse that I haven't shot in a while.[8D] Heck I didn't get to practice last year I did much better. Its weird how stuff pans out sometimes.

Rabbits 3 me 0 so far!

Till next time folks!!!

Thats not too bad, rabbits can be trickey to hit, and I swear they dodge when they see an arrow coming!

Better luck next time.

That's funny. You'll get another crack at them I'm sure.

Last thing I shot at was a woodchuck out my upstairs back window (I have to take them out myself since the death of my lab/dane mix, he was real good at taken them out). It was only about 12 yards and I thought he was a toast. Unfortunately, I didn't compensate for the window sill and quess what I hit? [:@]

Here is a pick of my old friend:

The most enjoyable part about maintaining a garden is keeping the rabbits at bay. ;)

Well its now 0 for 6![:@] I missed 3 times this evening and lost an arrow. The shots were out there a ways tonight. Rabbits are starting to get jumpy now with me chasing them around. 2 out of the 3 shots the rabbits were gone before the arrow even got there. Both of them shots would of connected too! Oh well I guess, fun target practice.

Lmao!! Its been a thought in my head tonight. I like my garden to much to be missing all the time with my recurve. Whats a good brand video or camcorder anyway??

Are you using Judo points?

Schultzy 06-19-2008 08:46 AM

RE: Damn Rabbits!!

Nope. I'm using bear broadheads. They are fairly cheap so If I loose an arrow I won't get to ticked off. I normally shoot snuffers but I don't want to loose any of those.

RE: Damn Rabbits!!

Hey get you a gobbler Guillotine, that should take care of them near misses. hahaha ActuallyI dont know how durable those are and they may break..

I think with me and rabbits is if I kill a few a build up a confidence and then I start missing. I really have to make myself hold it on a rabbit now days.I can stick them though, just not everytime....

RE: Damn Rabbits!!

Yep killer there kicking my ass good! I never thought about using a bigger broadhead like you said. Good idea there! I better think of something or pull the shotgun out because I checked my garden this morning and the SOB's ate more of my peas![:@] I even sprinkled this garden dust stuff on them to keep them off. It worked alright last year but not this year. It is a few years old so maybe it lost its potentness.

The more I think about it the 870 is coming out.[8D]

Yeah with the prices of fertilize and stuff this year and not to mention fuel, I think I would pull out the ole boom stick. WE have about 10 acres of sweet corn and there is a squirrel eating some of it, he's gonna get the boom stick ifI see him.. We have about 5 acres of peas and the rabbits havent been too bad yet. however our watermelon patch is getting hit byt the racoons almost every night. Been trying to trap them but I guess they got us figured out. Have to bring my dog and my light one night to geta few of them coons...

RE: Damn Rabbits!!

Hey I will tell youa neat broadhead for rabbits, if you hae some old thunderheads laying around you turn the blades around backwards on them and take some small zip ties and fasten them so the blades wont come off, or you can wrap it with dental floss and tie it off, but wwhatever you do make sure it staysin tight. It will act like a judo point by not allowing your arrow to go under the grass and it will knock one mean hole in a cotton tail..

Good idea!!!

Good luck with them coons! I use live traps on mine and it works pretty well. I usually dab some molasses inside the live trap.

Are you shooting a trad bow in that vid? Cuz your arrow had plastic fletches on it and with most traditional bows you need feather fletches.

Well the 870 did come out. I took it out right before dark last night and snuck up to 2 rabbits about 5' apart from each other. I lined myself up to where I could take one shot and hope to hit them both. It worked!!:D I got myself 2 rabbits in one shot with the 12 gauge. I couldn't hold out any longer, them SOB's kept on taking more of my garden. That damn recurve of mine was hard on me this week, I had to do something![8D]

1 inch off at any distance = no meat tonight.

Solution: Shoot closer, or practice more. Check arrows for imperfections.

On the plus side, you may never run out of rabbits to practice on.

May your stewpot be always full.
