what's your max range?

what would you say is the farthest you can shoot accurately(by your definition) with your trad-bow?

RE: what's your max range?

Generally a good rule is half of your practice distance. I can reliably hit targets out to 35 yards. And would say I can reliably hit animals at 18-20 yards.

RE: what's your max range?

My comfort zone is 12 to 18 yards while hunting. Beyond that with a recurve I feel I'm pushing my luck on a live animal. That's just for me though. I know others are comfortable with much longer ranges.

RE: what's your max range?

It really depends on the day for me. Most times its in that 20 yard range. Every time before I leave the house to go hunting I shoot 10 to 12 arrows before I head out. I'll practice from 10 to 20 yards. If I'm shooting good out to 20 and feeling good about it I'll do the same when hunting. There's days where I won't take a shot over 15 yards because I'm just terrible that day at anything farther out then that. I've taken one doe at 21 yards on a very slow trot and I nailed her perfect on the move double lunging her and catching the top of her heart also, it was exactly where I was looking and concentrating on when I released the arrow. That has been my longest shot. 12 to 13 yards is my favorite distance.

Boy thats a tough question. And it all depends. The other day I shot at a Caribou target at 45 yards and the shot couldn't be more perfect. But sometimes the chip shots seem tough.

My normal range that I would feel comfortable shooting at a deer is usually about 25 yards or closer though.

i've only got a 25# longbow but i'm maxed out around 15yds. anything under that i can nail the tardet no problem. i'm hoping to get a bowstick U-finish soon so it'll be easier to hit the further targets I hope.

25 yards is my max hunting distance. I'll practice out to 35-40 so I'll be confident on closer shots.
This was a 56 yard shot at the Baltimore Traditional Classic last month. I actually nailed that black bear 3D in the X ring!

I honestly don't know at this point. For the most part I've got a ton of confidence right now. More than I've ever had. BUT I like to think I have a lot of restraint and common sense. Then throw in that I really haven't stepped off any official distances...I just shoot. Yea if I want to think about the number, I can give it a pretty good estimate, but for right now, I'm just going to go with.....I'll know it when the animal walks in front of me.

I won't take a shot at a deer over 15 yds. 20 is my target shooting max although I practice at 25. Feral hogs my max range is 132 yds or whatever I feel like flinging one at. I have no ethics where feral hogs are concerned.

Nice shot VA!

RE: what's your max range?

I'd say the farthest would be 24 yd. Mypreferred would be 15 yd. Beyond 24, I've got tothink about trajectory too much.

I shoot at anything that moves, regardless of distance. Ill just pull up the bow and let an arrow fly and hope I hit the animal.........

Now how many of you beileve that?:D With trad gear, 20 yards is my max. Ive never attempted any shot on an animal any further than 20 yards with my trad bows.

RE: what's your max range?

Right now I am practicing as far as 30 yds. When I hunt this fall I will be limiting myself to 20 yds. and everything will have be perfect for me to shoot that far. I would much rather be in the 10-15 yd. range.

RE: what's your max range?

Depends on the situation and howthings feel. The furthest I've taken an animal was 29 paces. It was one of those moments when everything just felt right, so I took the shot. She never moved a muscle until the arrow wasclean through her. Most days though, it's alittle bit closer mainly because I setupfor the close shot.

[/align]Two or three years ago I was bowhunting a WMA in VA. I had already called it a day and was riding out in my truck when I saw a guy walking down the dirt road at dusk. He was carrying a recurve bow of all things!;) Seeing another trad hunter I just had to stop and chat with him. After some small talk about bows and arrows he said to me “ yeah, I see plenty of deer on this road at this time of day”. I agreed with him saying that it was all but impossible to stalk close to them because either side of the road was thick briar. That’s when he told me “yeah, if I can see a deer I’ll fling an arrow at it, sometimes I hit them sometimes not. I’ve shot at deer 50, 75, 100 yards away”. He went on to tell some blood trailing stories, but I bid him farewell and left. [:'(]
