In reality, nothing.

It is more a personal pref. than anything else. Best thingI can say is shoot both, I started with a recurve then I shot a longbow and have been ever since. I just liked the way the longbow shoots

Usually, not always, the recurve have much more comfortable grips. And a recurve the string angle is not as steepat full draw. Recurves force angle should store more energy, but not always, as it may be harder to pull the recurve during the first and mid way thru the draw cycle, but it should level off. Where a straight sticklongbow might bevery easy at first and midway thru thedraw cycle.

But in the end, longbows generally draw much smoother, and that feels good to alot of archers.
