It's real tough to answer your question. I'd say to stay in the $200 or under range. If you could get to a larger shoot, there are usually used bows available to try out. Or if you find something specific you may want to bring it here and ask. Usually old bears in good condition are a good start (and sometimes finish). Ask though if they have stress cracks, or limb twists in them. Some stress cracks are OK, but I wouldn't get one with too many or cracks that meet. The crackswill usually run with, not against the limbs at the fade outs. I got my son an early 70's bear hunter whichwas in very good shape for $200, no cracks at all. Others brands are Shakespear andRed Wing.

Or, for a little more, you may also want to check with Chad (LBR) to see if he has any chek-mates in stock that might fit you or be close. They would be about the only brand new bow I'd suggest. They are very well valued for the price.
