Depends, for turkey, I'll use a broadhead, for other stuff, I use a modfied bludgeon. I modify them so they will stand up in grass (right), you can also fit a bleeder blade in them if needed:

Ace Hex Blunts or old/damaged/cheap broadheads.

I love shooting judos for stump shooting, but they tend to penetrate and pass thru small game. I have had them make too many 'messes', so now I use Bludgeons for rabbits and squirrels.Have yet to try the Ace small game head, but it's on my list. Broadheads, of course, for anything larger than rabbits and squirrels.

Have used judos in the past and have had good success. Does make a mess removing pass through arrows though. Switched to hex blunts recently but have yet to hit fur or feather. I expect them to be great though.

Haven't got that far yet.......[8D][8D][8D][8D] Gotta find a stump shoot head first!

I must be the odd-ball (so what's new?)--at best I had very limited success with judos, rubber blunts, and homemade blunts. For a long time I would only used broadheads for small game, because of the crappy results I often got with other heads. The only guaranteed kill shots I got with the others were hits that would have been fatal with a field point.
I haven't really tested the Hex blunts on anything other than grouse, but I do know that birds were lost to judos, regular steel blunts, and rubber blunts. Every bird hit with a Hex blunt went down, even on marginal hits. Hope to test them on some rabbits--if they do as well on those as they did the grouse, I'm sold. Oh yeah--I did shoot one squirrel with a Hex blunt--it was DRT (Dead Right There). Chad |

I know that's probably the best advice Art, but danged if I can make myself do it. When I go rabbit hunting, I've got stew, dumplings, etc. on the brain!
It's been a while since I did any rabbit hunting, but I've been taking cheap/damaged broadheads for a while when I do go. Even that's not a guarantee, but I'm pretty sure I put more rabbits in the pot than I would just taking head shots! Oh yeah--what you do focus on when they got their back to you? Totally off topic, but that reminds me of a Western I saw several years ago--"El Diablo". Best line in the whole movie......"You shot that man in the back!" "Well, his back was to me!" Chad |
