short bows, curves/lb
 

I am kind of curious. Beprepn's post and a friend of mine with a old bear bow, super short thing recently surfacing. Why the trend for the shorter bows?

I hear it I would say 1 of 2 times I go to shoot my bow is to long but yet find myself very comfortable from treestands, sitting crosslegged on the fanny, stalking, and still hunting with a 68" bow. I do feel with my draw in most bow designs a 66"er would be perfect for performance to drawlength ratio.

People talk of brush bows for longbows....I could see the vantage of a super short bow in willows chasing rabbits/hares but dont see it overall. Even then though I do quite well with my old 68" 60lb excaliber Doug Knight Longbow chasing the big white hares of the north. Reason being is most of us "set up" a shot regardless of how we hunt. A successful bowhunter of any kind, stalker, still hunter, tree stand, or blind style is aware of whats around them at all times. We are constantly looking for game and how a situation may play itself out. We stalk, place stands, blinds, in scenerios that allow us to shoot the way we need to.

Most on the curves side seem to sit around 58, 60 or 62" depending on bow design and draw length.

That said the allegany Mt bow, shrews, and a myriad of other "brush" bows (longbows and recurves), are they worth it? other then mobility (which I see very little of without a drastic length diff) what is to gain? I do see a gain in shooting a "shorter" bow, but not a short bow due to draw length and bow design (dl to bow design ratio if you will). To long for the draw and you are loosing performance, to short, you are loosing stability but just how much is it?

I guess I am just trying to get a good idea after reading bowyers comments and ads on brush bows and posts around the internet on short bows in general. Whats your thoughts.............

I've got an assortment of different bows, different lengths. A short recurve "buffalo" bow that's really fun to shoot and a "shorter" R/D longbow that is a nice shooter too...but, when time comes to hunt the 66" longbow usually gets the nod.

Pretty much a personal decision but I'd say if you're comfortable and confident with the 68" longbow then it can't be "too long".

It's kinda amazing how the extra length just doesn't matter much anymore. Guess I got used it.

Hey Lil I like my shrew for huntin in my DD Bull blind. For tree stand huntin i use my 60"'s an 64"'s bow. hows yer season goin , lost the address fer yer webpage. Thanks Widow

'cause here in S. Indiana we hunt the bucks in their briar beds. Stuff is so thick, you can't draw a bow in it. I like longer bows for accuracy, but hunt with a 60" supershrew. It get's hung up too, but not as often as my longer Saxons.

For some reason I like a bow around 62&quot;. My two favorite longbows are both 62&quot;. One is a 62&quot; crusader t/d and the other is a 62&quot; deathwish longbow. The crusader is silky smooth right out to 30&quot; but the deathwish does start to stack a bit at the end. I used to have a 66&quot; chinook and liked it also. It shot very well but during a short stint of &quot;speed craze&quot; I sold it off for a real fast recurve. Oh well you live and learn. As long as a bow is smooth and stable it doesn't much matter how long it is. I do like the shorter bows for thick brush and corn feild hunting though. I think its mainly personal prefference. I know one guy who likes short bows because the longer ones are hard to draw with his generous beer belly, the string hits his gut making it hard to get full draw. Maybe thats part of the short bow trend, .<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I agree with Mr. Sorenson, as long as the bow is smooth and stable at your draw length it probably does not make to much difference. Personally I hunt and shoot tournaments with a 66 and a 69 inch Sky longbow. I have never hunted from a tree (not comfortable in them)and have had good success from the ground. Accuracy wise I firmly believe the longer bow will be easier to shoot well but being a old FITA target shooter who has never really given a well designed short bow a chance I can not say that is a fact.

I love my 66&quot; Crusader, even though my 64&quot; is a tiny bit smoother (2.5# per inch vs 2# per inch), and seems to be just as fast even though it is 5# lighter in draw weight.

Beprepn, the bow is only as accurate as the shooter. In general, shorter bows are less forgiving of shooter mistakes and require a little more fine tuning. Short bows don't always stack either--one that I am familiar with is the Chek-Mate Firebird, a 56&quot; take-down recurve, that will handle a 30&quot; draw. You do get more finger pinch though.

thanks for the replys. Looks like I'll have to snag your crusader next winter Josh for some true &quot;field testing&quot;. Hopefully I can get things rigged up this summer.

I think I agree most with what you are saying Chad. Less forgiving. I just wonder how less stable (as it seems to always be termed) say a 62&quot; vs a 68&quot; crusader say with a 29&quot; draw. The gains vs the losses kinda thing.

Josh, you need to get out more, not many corn fields up here <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>! Not to mention when ya lay a 68&quot; bow down on the tundra it gets lots just as easy and still looks as small <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>! (havent done the bow but did temp mis place my back pack. We really knew where it was at but couldnt see it, ya thats it LOL!). Btw, near Wasilla is some good yoodling country. That or I am sure a few vixens are around. Got some friends out that way if your interested.
