another turkey question
 

this as well maybe a stupid question, be i never shot a turkey with a bow- do you use a tracker string on your arrow? what do you do after the shot and the bird flys away? like i said i never harvested a turkey with a bow and i want to know what to expect. when hit with a 12ga. 3.5in magnum they usually don't go anywere.

Wulff, I touched on string trackers in the other turkey question too. I do not like them personnally, I have had some bad experiences with them, but that is me, many of the other archers I know use them with good results. The only bird I bagged with a bow sort of committed suicide. My partner and I had just called a flock into range for him to put one down with his 3 1/2&quot; 12ga. and the rest scattered. As we were admiring his jake another jake flew into the woodline darn near on top of us! As soon as the new comer seen us it tried to hide in a bare bush. It was like the cartoons where the ostrich sticks its head in the sand. Well me hunting with my bow took the offerred shot only to be foiled by a low hanging branch (Oniedas are real finicky about that); first arrow went short. All the jake did was lift its head and look directly at me, which by this time I had another arrow at full draw, second arrow pinned him to the ground. That was the dumbest bird I have ever eaten <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>, he did get revenge though, he broke my arrow in half at the end. Turkeys are as challenging to hunt as deer, no two are alike.

I have shot quite a few turkeys with my longbow . Here is what I have learned.

1- The only sure fire way to recover the bird every time is to shoot it in the head ! I learned this after shooting many birds in the body and they flew off never to be found . This sickend me and I started head shooting them every time. The way I figure it , I either kill it and find it or miss it and hunt it again another day. Of all the birds I have shot in the head I have a 100 % recovery ratio.


2- Now then , I started looking for something that I could use at longer shoots so I could take birds out there to . Well I found it. I started shooting Rocket expanable broadheads. The 3 bladed, 1 3/4 &quot; model. If you shoot the bird right at the wing joint you will recover the bird almost every time . The almost is if you hit lower on the wing sometimes it will not kill it . But, if you miss high your ok ! Have done this a few times and what you get is a turkey with no head !
