short recurve

I'm looking at a Browning Nomad, 54 inch. I have a 30 inch draw with a recurve. I had been looking for a 62+ inch bow, but the Nomad appears to be designed to work at a shorter length. Is this bow going to work for me?

I would doubt it.Keep looking for a longer recurve. Dick

Most likely it will stack like the devil on you. At best, it will be real finicky with release and/or arrow spine and/or brace height and/or nock point and/or silencer placement, etc.

There are some short bows designed to handle a longer draw (the 56" Chek-Mate Firebird will handle 30"), but as I was told, everthing is a trade-off. Some 62" bows weren't made for a 30" draw--that is the curse those of use with more than a 28-29" draw have to deal with. On the other hand, we do get great cast--lol.

The Browning will probably stack, which is loading the weight unevenly, usually increasing at a higher rate per inch of draw, than it normally would at a lesser draw length. The shorter bows, especially the older ones, will also pinch the fingers, which causes release problems, which causes accuracy problems, which causes frustration in the archer, which causes, well, you get the picture. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I'd suggest going with a bow 62&quot; long and even then, some bows just aren't meant to be shot by someone with a draw that exceeds 28-29&quot;. The Martin Hunter is one 62&quot; bow that will stack for a draw exceeding 29&quot;. On the other hand, there are some shorter bows that are designed to be very forgiving to longer draw lengths. Take your time and get a bow that is right for you, your shooting style and needs. You'll be glad that you did.

Make em sharp and shoot em straight, or leave em home.

Thanks - the new plan is to look for something 62+ inches and post the model here before I buy!

I've got some candidates from Ebay, all 62+ inches.

Shakespear T/D, 62&quot;
Herters T/D perfection mag, 62&quot;
Ben Pearson colt 62&quot;
Wing presentation 66&quot;
Bear Polar 66&quot;

Are any of these really good or really bad?

Like others have said, the Browning Nomad is not a bow for your draw length.

Sorry...

Shakespear: What model? Some were good, other's not.

Herters: Sounds like a winner.

Pearson Colt: Not a bad bow, but very much a bottom of the line one.

Wing Presentation 66&quot;: Outstanding bows!

Bear Polar: I'd take a pass.

hey beprepn,

are you shooting recurves/longbows currently? or are you converting from a compound? the reason i ask is because some have expereinced a shorter draw length after switching. your 30&quot; draw on a compound may be 28&quot; on a recurve.

RE: short recurve

The Shakespear is a magnesium handle takedown, they don't give the model. It might be too ugly to buy.

there is also a PSE Heritage Series Talon TD that has appeared on Ebay, also 62&quot;.

and an AMF wing thunderbird, 62&quot;.

I have a Martin x200 that is 25# and 60 inches. It is quite hard to hold at full draw, much harder than my 60#, 50% letoff compound, so I think it is stacking. I shoot 32&quot; arrows out of the compound and about an inch sticks out past the riser. So based on these two bows, I'm thinking that my draw with a hunting recurve will be about 30&quot;.

Pass on the PSE. Their line of recurves are (in my opinion) JUNK. I think that JRW gave a good opinion on the bows you had listed. I've heard nothing but good about the Wing Presentation bows and as long as the weight isn't so high that you are overbowed, the 66&quot; length will help to ensure that your long draw doesn't cause problems with finger pinch and the bow should be fairly forgiving.

Yep, I'd be willing to bet that the little Martin was stacking for you. You'd probably be better off buying a bow in the 30-40# @28&quot; range so that you're not overbowed to start off with. It will allow you to build up the needed strength for accuracy and will also help to keep you from developing the bad habits that go along with being overbowed.

Make em sharp and shoot em straight, or leave em home.

I'm new here..hope you don't mind my imput.

If you're wanting a short bow with your longer draw length I'd make a couple suggestions. First take notice of the riser/limb ratio. Some bows, even though they may be of longer length, will be difficult to shoot with your draw length. They have a rather lengthy riser section which results in a shorter limb length, that makes a longer draw uncomfortable. Of course, longer limbs and a shorter riser handles longer draw lengths much better. There are trade-offs involved that makes the next suggestion most important

Most importantly would be to shoot the bow, or one like it, prior to purchasing. But, I'm sure you already know that.

good luck

I had a nomad. It's smooth, but picky as heck. I've shot a recurve all my life, but I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with a nomad.

&quot;Hey ya'll, watch this&quot;

If you can find a Browning Explorer II, you will find its a nice looking good shooting bow. Try for one around #45.
